Pursuant to Commonwealth Act 111 as amended by the Republic Act 7278 the
Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) celebrates its 87 th Charter Anniversary and
2023 National Scouting Month this October, the purpose of which is to showcase
to the public and its stakeholders the contribution of the BSP to nation-building
through the development of young people by actively engaging and supporting
them to become agents of change in their communities. This year’s theme is
“SUSTAINING GROWTH” which specifically aims to:
Rationale 1. Promote BSP as foremost in developing the young people to become
responsible citizens and leaders in their respective homes, schools, and
communities.
2. Foster camaraderie among members of the scouting community in the
country.
3. Celebrate thanksgiving with a sense of pride and belongingness as
member of the Scouting movement.
As stipulated in the BSP National Office Memorandum No. 61, s. 2023 issued
last September 18, 2023. All Local Councils and Scouting Units are encouraged
to hold activities relevant to the theme in support of the celebration. One of the
suggested activities is the School Backyard Camp. But due to the limited time for
preparation since the organization were just recently able to reorganize and to
give ample time for the students to focus on their academic preparations for the
First Quarter Examination this coming October 26- 27, 2023, the conduct of the
said activity will be postponed to a much later schedule.

Backyard Camping for Senior Scouts serves a s a valuable and practical way to
continue their outdoor education, foster love for nature, and develop essential life
skills. The activity allows Senior Scouts to practice and refine their outdoor skills
in a controlled environment where they can set up tents, build fires and cook
meals which are essential camping skills. Backyard camping is also and
accessible and convenient way of camping, making it a suitable option for Scouts
who may not have access to wilderness areas. It promotes the idea that outdoor
experiences can be enjoyed close to home. It also provides a safer environment
for Senior Scouts, especially to those who are relatively new to Scouting. They
are close to home and can easily access resources and assistance if needed. It is
typically more budget-friendly, as it eliminates the need for transportation and
camping fees associated with more remote camping locations. In this activity,
Senior Scouts can still work on team-building and leadership skills through
activities like assigning responsibilities and working together to accomplish
tasks. It offers opportunities for Scouts to learn about and appreciate the natural
world, even in urban and suburban settings, promoting environmental
stewardship. In summary, backyard camping promotes the idea that outdoor
experiences and learning can happen within the confines of the community and
the school.
