Jeevay Sanjha Punjab
Introduction
The partition of 1947 not only resulted in the loss of life and property but also led to the separation of the Sikh
community from their significant historical Gurdwaras and monuments in Lehnda Punjab. This division has lasted
over 75 years and left many of these sites forgotten. This project, of immense historical significance, aims to
revive the 'lost to memory' Sikh historical shrines in the community's consciousness. Your interest and support
are not just crucial but integral to this endeavor.
The 75-year separation of Sikhs from their historical shrines has resulted not only in physical distance but also a
significant loss of memory for the Sikh community. The emotional toll of this separation is immense, with many of
the Sikh historical shrines left back in Pakistan having been forgotten from the community's collective memory,
especially those in villages.
Jeevay Sanjha Punjab undertook the meticulous and dedicated task of documenting these 'lost to memory' Sikh
historical shrines in selected districts of Pakistan. Our dedication is evident in our extensive study of as many
books as possible published before 1947 on Sikh Gurdwaras in Punjab, all written in Gurmukhi, and our
consultation of maps of Lahore published before the partition. The second step was to compile an exhaustive
database of over 200 such historical shrine sites in Pakistan (mainly in Lehnda Punjab), along with the site's
history and as much information available on the site's exact location. The third step was to visit each site, locate,
and document the shrine. The background research and meetings with local village elders allowed us to locate
each of the over 40 sites in the Lahore district. In some cases, the shrine still existed (often in ruins), but in most
cases, it had been demolished, and another religious or non-religious monument was built over it. This booklet is
the outcome of this meticulous and dedicated work for the current Lahore District of Pakistan.
Through this work, we are reviving many 'lost to memory' Gurdwaras of the Sikh Gurus in Pakistan, returning them
to the community's memory. We hope future generations of our community will remember these places
associated with our Sikh Gurus, and may our great-grandchildren work to restore these sites to their former glory.
Our collective responsibility and your commitment are to ensure that these sites associated with our Sikh Gurus
are never forgotten again.
We deeply appreciate the collaboration with the Panjab Digital Library (www.panjabdigilib.org/) and its
permission to access its records. We also gratefully acknowledge Dasvand Network's (https://dvnetwork.org/)
support. We also appreciate the cooperation of the Walled City of Lahore Authority
(https://walledcitylahore.gop.pk/).

1. Gurdwara Nanakgarh Patshahi Pehli (31°36'22.6"N 74°19'23.5"E): This site holds great significance as
it was where Siri Guru Nanak Sahib stayed when he visited
Bangalianwala Bagh, located north of Budha Ravi and Badami Bagh.
From there, he proceeded to Gurdwara Bhai Duni Chand Patshahi Pehli
at the request of Bhai Dunni Chand. Now, a home is built in its place.
This Gurdwara had approximately 2.5 acres of land and a well attached
to it before 1947. Watch a video of it at https://bit.ly/3XKKI60.
5. Gurdwara Chota Nankana Patshahi Pehli (31°18'26.8"N 74°04'40.4"E): Located near the village of
Manga, Siri Guru Nanak Sahib stayed here for a few days in the jungle.
The Gurdwara building still stands without a roof, and the fisheries
department uses the large Sarovar around it. This Gurdwara had 135
acres of land attached to it before 1947. Watch a video of it at

8. Gurdwara Janamasthan Patshahi Chauthi (31°35'05.6"N 74°19'15.9"E): Siri Guru Ram Das Sahib was
born here in 1534 to the family of Bhai Haridas and Mata Daya Kaur.
There is an old well here. Mai Nakaian, the eldest wife of Maharaja
Ranjit Singh, originally built the Gurdwara. This Gurdwara had 18
shops attached to it before 1947. Watch a video of it at
https://bit.ly/4iVe7CW.
9. Gurdwara Dharamsal Patshahi Chauthi (31°35'06.2"N 74°19'15.0"E): This place was initially built by
the ancestors of Siri Guru Ram Das Sahib. He always stayed here when he was in Lahore. It is
immediately west of Gurdwara Janamasthan Patshahi Chauthi. Siri
Guru Arjan Sahib also stayed here on visits to Lahore. This Gurdwara
was merged with the compound of Gurdwara Diwankhana Patshahi
Panjvin by the 1930s. The place is now in ruins and considered
disputed property. This Gurdwara had four adjacent shops and
approximately 20 acres of land in the village of Rana Bhatti (Tehsil
Shahdara) attached to it before 1947. Watch a video of it at
https://bit.ly/4i5EEwa.

Arjan Sahib was imprisoned and tortured here by Diwan Chandu Shah in 1606.
This is where Guru Sahib was tortured by sitting on a hot cooking plate, boiling in
hot water, and having hot sand poured on him by servants of Chandu Shah. This
Gurdwara was inside Mochi Gate. The Gurdwara was built atop the well where
Guru Sahib had bathed. Next to Lal Khoo is the Haveli of Chandu Shah, located
just southwest of the well on the same side of the road. This Gurdwara had one

three months at the invitation of carpenter Jeeon. He then visited here on several occasions. The building
was reconstructed in
1921. There was also a
Beri tree here from the
time of Guru Sahib.
This was the first
Gurdwara released
from the control of
Mahants by the Sikh
Panth. On August 13, 1947, a terrible massacre of Sikhs took place here of Sikhs, and the building was
burned down. A home now stands here. This Gurdwara had nine shops, one house, and about 90 acres of

This publication is dedicated to the sacred heritage of Lahore — a city that was once
home to countless Sikh historical shrines, left behind after the painful partition of 1947.
When the borders of Punjab were drawn, it was not just land that was divided — it was
history, heritage, and the living memories of generations. The pain of partition was so
deep that it became part of our daily Ardas (prayer), where even today, we humbly seek
"Khulle Darshan Didar te Seva Sambhal" of our historical Gurdwaras and shrines left
across the border.
Had there been no partition, perhaps we would have grown up playing in the streets of
Lahore, under the shadow of the empire of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Some of us might
have been farming the same land near Kartarpur where Siri Guru Nanak Sahib Ji
sowed the seeds of divine wisdom and agriculture. We lost countless religious and
historical treasures left behind in Lehnda (Western) Punjab, now in Pakistan. But to
forget them would be a second loss — even greater than the first.
This booklet is a humble effort to preserve the ‘lost memory’ of Sikh historical shrines
in the Lahore district — so that our young generation knows not only what we have
today, but also what we have lost. This is just the beginning — an effort limited to
Lahore for now. With time, Jeevay Sanjha Punjab aims to expand this work to the
