Introduction
This SBA explores the topic ‘Gambling’ and the sub topic ‘Gambling addiction’. The researcher,
along with his group members will work along-side each other in order to finish this SBA on a
timely manner. He is looking forward to go through the effects of gambling addiction on his/her
family, friends and people around them and how it may affect the gambler themselves. In order
to find these effects. He will be using the internet as a form of data collection method because of
its efficiency and accuracy and it’s known as a fast way of collecting information when
compared to traditional methods. It will also give him various options to use as further help for
his SBA. He will be working alongside his English A teacher, Miss Natoya Barth, in order to for
him to identify any possible mistakes so that he can correct them.
Acknowledgement
Firstly, I would like to express his thanks to the great Almighty God for giving me the strength
and resources to complete this School Based Assessment. Secondly, I would like to thank his
group members on the completion on this SBA and also give thanks to my teacher Miss Natoya
Barth for being besides me through-out this assignment to meet the necessary expectations.
Without their cooperation, this SBA would not have been completed in timely manner.
Finally, I would like to give thanks to my parents for their financial role and emotional support.
Without them, the completion of this SBA would have not been possible.`
Plan of Investigation
The researcher’s group’s topic is based on ‘Gambling’. However, I have chosen ‘gambling
addiction’ as his sub-topic.
This sub-topic was selected because the researcher thought it is very interesting and also that it is
very important to know the consequences of gambling addiction, to also raise awareness about it
to those who do not take gambling addiction as a serious situation.
While doing this SBA, I am looking forward to build on his time management skills and public
speaking.
I plan to use sources such as the internet. The artefacts I will use are an article, video and a poem

Article:
What is gambling addiction and problem gambling?
Gambling problems can happen to anyone from any walk of life. Your gambling goes from a
fun, harmless diversion to an unhealthy obsession with serious consequences. Whether you bet
on sports, scratch cards, roulette, poker, or slots—in a casino, at the track, or online—a gambling
problem can strain your relationships, interfere with work, and lead to financial disaster. You
may even do things you never thought you would, like running up huge debts or even stealing
money to gamble.
Gambling addiction—also known as pathological gambling, compulsive gambling or gambling
disorder—is an impulse-control disorder. If you’re a compulsive gambler, you can’t control the
impulse to gamble, even when it has negative consequences for you or your loved ones. You’ll
gamble whether you’re up or down, broke or flush, and you’ll keep gambling regardless of the
consequences—even when you know that the odds are against you or you can’t afford to lose.
Of course, you can also have a gambling problem without being totally out of control. Problem
gambling is any gambling behavior that disrupts your life. If you’re preoccupied with gambling,
spending more and more time and money on it, chasing losses, or gambling despite serious
consequences in your life, you have a gambling problem.
A gambling addiction or problem is often associated with other behavior or mood disorders.
Many problem gamblers also suffer with substance abuse issues, unmanaged ADHD, stress,
depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. To overcome your gambling problems, you’ll also need
to address these and any other underlying causes as well.
Although it may feel like you’re powerless to stop gambling, there are plenty of things you can
do to overcome the problem, repair your relationships and finances, and finally regain control of
your life.
The first step is to separate the myths from the facts about gambling problems:
Myths and Facts about Gambling Problems
Myth:
You have to gamble every day to be a problem gambler.
Fact:
A problem gambler may gamble frequently or infrequently. Gambling is a problem if it causes
problems.
Myth:
Problem gambling is not really a problem if the gambler can afford it.
Fact:
Problems caused by excessive gambling are not just financial. Too much time spent on gambling
can also lead to relationship and legal problems, job loss, mental health problems including
depression and anxiety, and even suicide.
Myth:
Having a gambling problem is just a case of being weak-willed, irresponsible, or
unintelligent.
Fact:
Gambling problems affect people of all levels of intelligence and all backgrounds. Previously
responsible and strong-willed people are just as likely to develop a gambling problem as anyone
else.
Myth:
Partners of problem gamblers often drive their loved ones to gamble.
Fact:
Problem gamblers often try to rationalize their behavior. Blaming others is one way to avoid
taking responsibility for their actions, including what is needed to overcome the problem.
Myth:
If a problem gambler builds up a debt, you should help them take care of it.

Poem
The Gambler, Revisited
Hold on
Admissions...
The night and swelling sidewalks
Call to me.
Folding.
Submission.
Those blinking lights, a quickly
soothing need
Blue-white.
the walk signs,
I'm running past the end of
random chance
Do winners ever quit when
they're ahead?
Too many of these casino nights.
I never let them end, because I
swear that Lucky Lil has eyes for me.
So I'll take my chances.
One more dance with these snakebite
pints 'til I
can roll these X'd out lids
over these swollen snake eyes.
Deuces.
I'm losing.
These sights and sounds made fuzzy,
buzzing slack.
Jackpot.
They have me.
I'm out of moves and fading
quick to black.
Odds are
I'm ending
the night wand'ring the sidewalks
with old dreams.
Cuz losers never quit when
they're ahead.
Too many of these casino nights
I never let them end because I
swear that Lucky Lil has eyes for me.
But she's rolling shoulder,
rolling pupils and shooting
weighted dice.
So roll my body out, over
the curb, to midnight.
Because I can never quit
when I'm ahead.
Reflection 1
The knowledge I had on the effects of gambling addiction was fairly limited before diving into
this topic. However following my extensive research, my understanding of this topic has been
widened.
Artefact one: This piece changed my perspective on the effects of gambling addiction to a
person, which often results in heavy psychological effects on a person. I think the link that exists
between the human mind and gambling addiction is evident
Artefact two: ‘What is Gambling Addiction’ (American Psychiatric Association2023) This visual
representation illuminated the reality of individuals who suffer from compulsive gambling
neglects responsibilities, hiding the gambling behavior to increase the amount of time and money
spent on it.
Artefact three: ‘The Gambler Revisited’ (K.Kulseth 2024) This poem profoundly affected me
illustrating how persons dissatisfied with their own reality resort to gambling inflicting emotional
stress and psychological damage. The absence of self-awareness encourage these individuals
transforming them into addicts in the gambling world. Ultimately, understanding these
connections fosters empathy and highlights the urgent need for support and intervention for those
affected.
Reflection 2
Artefact one: This article is meticulously crafted with elements like evidence from credible
resources and employs impactful language that stirs the reader’s mind effectively. It is also
abundant in facts and the inclusion of quotes from authorities further enhances its credibility.
The combination of these elements make the article highly appealing and engaging for others
leaving a strong impression.
Artefact two: The video effectively used graphical illustrations to create a clear explanation of
what is gambling and gambling addiction. The content allowed viewers to follow along, while
the color theme provided a perfect tone, the background music completed the video’s tone and
the clips provided a sharp depiction of gambling addiction along with the effects.
Artefact three: The poem uses rhymes to establish rhythm making it catchy
Reflection 3
This SBA has benefited me personally and academically as an English student, culturally, and
socially. Personally, it has taught me to manage my time wisely and prioritize submitting work
before deadlines. Academically, it has deepened my understanding of gambling addiction,
allowing me to more deeply on situations which may seem normal on the outside.
Working on this SBA as a group strengthened our teamwork and support for each other, helping
us tackle challenges and complete the project on time. We gained a more professional
perspective on gambling, learning about this topic collaboratively.
As an English student, this experience helped me structure my ideas more clearly, enhanced my
time management, and improved my public speaking and self-discipline skills.
