Car Basic Mechanics & Maintenance

Part 1 – Discussion

→ Discuss with a partner:

1. Have you ever had a car problem or breakdown? What happened?

2. Do you know how to check oil, change a tire, or jump-start a car?

3. Why do you think many people avoid learning about car maintenance?

Part 2 – Reading: "Things Every Driver Should Know"

(by Mike Sullivan, Car Enthusiast & DIY Mechanic)

"To be honest, I didn’t grow up knowing much about cars. But after paying hundreds of dollars for simple repairs,
I decided to start learning the basics. You’d be surprised how many common car issues you can handle yourself
with a little patience and a YouTube tutorial.

The first thing I learned was how to check and change the oil. It’s easier than people think — you just need to
locate the oil dipstick, check the level, and make sure the oil isn’t dirty. Changing it takes about 30 minutes once
you get the hang of it.

Then there’s tire care — knowing how to check the tire pressure and inflate the tires properly is crucial,
especially before long trips. I also learned how to change a flat tire, which is a lifesaver when roadside assistance
takes forever.

Another useful skill is jump-starting a car. If your battery dies, all you need are jumper cables and a second car.
It’s simple, but you have to connect the cables in the right order.

Of course, there are things I still leave to professionals, like brake pad replacement or anything related to the
transmission. But for basic stuff — checking fluids, changing windshield wipers, or replacing a dead battery —
doing it myself has saved me a lot of time and money.

My advice? Start small. Learn where everything is under the hood. Read your car manual. Watch
tutorials. The more comfortable you get, the less dependent you’ll be on expensive repairs for simple
problems."

Part 3 – Reading Comprehension

5. What repairs does he still leave to professionals?

6. What’s his final piece of advice for beginner car owners?
