Chapter 1

Introduction

Ayurveda is one of the oldest medicine systems


which rooting to ancient India from last 3000 years. It
includes treatment based on life forces which said that
health and wellness depend on mind, body, and spirit
and the environment.
Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word which combines “Ayur”
means “science” and “Vedas” means “knowledge of
life”. It is a traditional system of medicine used in India
from Vedic periods. It is believed that the concept of
the traditional ayurvedic medicine has existed since
Indus valley civilisation. Many researchers believed that
these ayurvedic texts or scriptures are transmitted or
narrated by Gods and written by Sages in the form of
VEDAS.
Vedas are considered as holy books in Hinduism,
these are considered as voice of God which includes
spells, scriptures and rituals. There are four Vedas: The
Rigveda, The Yajurveda, The Samaveda, The Atharveda.
The Ayurveda is considered as an Upaveda of the
Atharva Veda. It was said that Dhanvantri “The
Physician to God” had attributed the knowledge of
ayurveda, who received it from BRAMHA (The Creator
of Universe according to Hindu mythology). Different
types of Vedas are present which include treatment to
various diseases and disorders.
Treatment in Ayurveda
Ayurveda is said to be the safest medicine system in
which everyone needs its own and unique treatment.
Ayurvedic treatment generally focuses on
 Reduce symptoms
 Increase disease resistance
 Supports the body in removing toxins and
impurities.
Treatment in Ayurveda depend upon a basic principle
of life forces, it believed that every living body is made
of five basic elements of universe:
 Space (Akash)
 Earth (Prithvi)
 Water (Jal)
 Air (Vayu)
 Fire (Agni)
These life forces combine to form energies known as
DOSHAS. These Doshas help to control our body
functions and manages that how our body works.
There are 3 types of combination forms different
doshas:
1. Vata Dosha (Space and air)
2. Pitta Dosha (Fire and water)
3. Kapha Dosha (Water and Earth)
Ayurveda practices treatment with oils, herbs, spices,
yoga, meditations, metals, other materials.

According to Section 1(A) of “The drugs and cosmetics


act,1940”, “[Ayurvedic, Siddha or Unani] drug” includes
all medicines intended for internal or external use for
or in the diagnosis, treatment, mitigation or prevention
of [disease or disorder in human beings or animals, and
manufactured] exclusively in accordance with the
formulae described in, the authoritative books of
[Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani Tibb systems of
medicine], specified in the first Schedule.
The Charaka Samhita is said to be the oldest book
followed by The Sushruta Samhita, Hridaya ashtanga.
They provided the basic principle and theories which
helped the modern day ayurveda to evolve. Few other
books are given under Schedule 1 named as:
Arogya Kalpadruma, Arka Prakasha, Bangasena,
Bhaishajya Ratnavali, Bhava Prakasha, Gada Nigraha,
Sahasryogya, Rasamarita and Etc.
