ELECTRICAL TOOLS & INSTRUMENTS
(COMMON COMPETENCIES)
OBJECTIVE
At the end of this unit, the trainee should be able to:
• Identify different electrical tools and equipment.
• Familiarize with the different functions of
electrical tools and equipment.
• Maintain different electrical tools and equipment.
A. HAND TOOLS
HAND TOOLS are tools that can be used or operated by
our hands without using electrical energy, it doesn’t
need any external power. While MACHINE OR POWER
TOOLS are tools that require electrical energy and they
are operated by our hands too. Adequate knowledge in
handling and dealing with these different electrical tools
and equipment is important to avoid unnecessary
scenarios like accident and to be an efficient and
productive electrical practitioner
PLIERS

Pliers can be used for cutting, twisting, bending,

holding, and gripping of wires and cables. The handles
of the pliers will be insulated and it can’t be
considered as sufficient protection.
TYPES OF PLIERS
• Lineman’s pliers
• Long-nose pliers
• Diagonal-cutter pliers
• End-cutting pliers
• Cable-cutting plier/Bolt cutter
WIRE STRIPPERS

Wire strippers are used to remove the insulation of

wires, mostly medium-sized wires ranging from
gauge 10 to gauge 16. Wire strippers are also used to
remove the insulation of rubber covered wires from
gauge 26 to gauge 10
ELECTRICIAN KNIFE

These knives are used by lineman to remove

the insulation of big cables in high and low
voltage transmission lines.
SCREWDRIVER

Screwdrivers can be used to loosen or tighten screws with

slotted heads, screwdrivers are in various size and shape.
Screwdrivers are made up of steel and they are tempered at
the tip. According to the size and shape of screw different
types of screwdrivers are used.
FILE (ROUND, SQUARE, FLAT)

A file is a tool used to remove fine amounts of

material from a workpiece. It is commonly used by
electricians to remove saw burrs from the sharp
edges of metallic conduit after cutting.
VOLTAGE DETECTOR PEN

A voltage detector pen works by a process called capacitive

coupling. It senses the changing electric field around the
“alternating current” or AC conducting objects. These
voltage detector pens do not need to get in direct contact
with the object for testing the presence of current.
PIPE REAMER/HAND REAMER

Use to cut the sharp edges of the conduit to prevent

the wire from nicking or from being damage.
HAMMER

A hammer is a striking or splitting tool with a hardened head

fastened perpendicular to a handle. It is used to mount
electrical boxes and drive nails and also for chipping works. An
electrician’s hammer may also be used to determined the
height of receptacle boxes because most hammers are 12” in
length from head to end of handle, or can be so marked
B. POWER TOOLS

•Angle Grinder
•Electric Drill
•Chipping hammer/Chipping gun
ANGLE GRINDER

An angle grinder, also known as a side grinder or disc grinder, is a

handheld power tool used for grinding (abrasive
cutting) and polishing. Although developed originally as tools for
rigid abrasive discs, the availability of an interchangeable power
source has encouraged their use with a wide variety of cutters and
attachments.
ELECTRIC DRILL

A drill is a tool used for making round holes or driving

fasteners. It is fitted with a bit. Drills are commonly used
in woodworking, metalworking, construction, machine
tool fabrication, construction and utility projects.
CHIPPING HAMMER/CHIPPING GUN

Chipping hammers are durable, lightweight, hand-

held power tools used to chip away or break up concrete.
They are sturdy, highly maneuverable and can be
powered either electrically, pneumatically or
hydraulically. They are used for chipping works.
C. CUTTING TOOLS
•Three-wheel pipe cutter
•Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipe cutter
•Tin Snip
•Hacksaw
•Cross-cut saw
•Hole saw
THREE-WHEEL PIPE CUTTER

Three-wheel pipe cutter is used to cut electrical

conduit specifically metal conduits.
POLYVINYL CHLORIDE (PVC) PIPE CUTTER

PVC pipe cutter is used to cut up to 2” diameter pipe,

and hose quickly and accurately without the use of a
vise.
TIN SNIP

Used in cutting galvanized iron (GI) sheet and aluminum

sheet. This commonly used when fabricating metal
electrical panel boxes.
HACKSAW

Used to cut metal.

CROSS-CUT SAW

Used to cut across the grain of woods

HOLE SAW

Used for boring/cutting holes with the use of

electric drill.
D. BORING TOOL
•Knock Out Puncher
KNOCK OUT PUNCHER

A knockout punch, also known as a chassis punch, panel

punch, Greenlee punch, or a Q-max, is a hand tool used
to punch a hole through sheet metal. It is a very simple tool that
consists of a punch, die, and screw. There are three different
drive systems: manual, ratchet, and hydraulic. Electricians use
this tool to punch a hole in some conduit bodies like panel and
junction boxes.
E. CRIMPING TOOL/S:
• Manual and Automatic crimping tool
MANUAL AND AUTOMATIC CRIMPING
TOOL

Crimping tool is used by electricians when

terminating wires in panel boards. They commonly
used it when compressing the terminal lugs attached
in the wire.
F. THREADING TOOLS
• Pipe or conduit threader
PIPE OR CONDUIT THREADER

A pipe threader is a device used to cut grooves or threads into the end of
a metal conduit. These grooves are similar to those found on a traditional
screw, and serve the same basic function. A pipe threader allows
electricians to fasten a length of pipe securely to a coupling or connector.
The threads on the pipe fit into a pattern of threads in the connector,
allowing users to screw the two components together by hand. This
device allows installers to complete roughing-ins quickly, and also serves
as a handy tool for emergency or repair work.
G. HOLDING TOOLS
•C-Clamp
•Chain Pipe vise
•Tripod bench vise
C-CLAMP

A C-clamp or G-clamp or G-cramp is a type of clamp device

typically used to hold a wood or metal work piece, and
often used in, but are not limited to, carpentry and welding.
