CE 321 Building System Designs

Second Semester 2024

1. Course Description: This course focus on developing knowledge of building systems, including
architectural design building materials and construction techniques, and will foster the skills required to
adopt a building systems approach compliant to the National Building Code and its referral codes. The
Students developed knowledge of building systems will also include understanding of different types
and applications of building materials and diverse construction techniques. The Laboratory class will
focus on the tools and techniques to create a computer generated building model, and applied tools for
working with computer model exploring output and simulation. Students will develop techniques looking
at both realistsic and schematic representation, and the integration of building systems modelling as a
tool to inform and enhance the design process..

2. Course Objectives: At the end of the course, the students must be able to:

1. Identify appropriate provisions of the National Building Code and its referral codes as these apply
to buildings; .
2. Codes and Regulations: Ability to design sites, facilities, and system that are responsive to relevant
codes and regulations and include the principles of life safety and accessibility standards;
3. Technical Documentation; Ability to make technically clear drawings, prepare outline specifications,
and construct models illustrating and identifying the assembly of materials, systems, and
components appropriate for a building design..
4. Building Envelop Systems and Assemblies: Understanding of the Basic Principles involved in the
appropriate selection and application building envelope systems relative to fundamental
performance, aesthetics, moisture transfer, durability, and energy and material resources;
5. Building Materials And Assemblies: Understanding of the basic principles used in the appropriate
selection of interior and exterior construction materials, finishes, products, components, and
assemblies based on their inherent performance, including environmental impact and reuse;
6. Building Service Systems: Understanding of the basic principles and appropriate application and
performance of building service systems, including lighting, mechanical, plumbing, electrical,
communication, vertical transportation, security, and fire protection systems;
7. Financial Considerations Understanding of the fundamentals of building costs, which must include
life-cycle costs.

7. Classroom Policies
1. Any student who comes to class 15 minutes after the official time for the start of the class shall be
marked late. Four marks of tardiness are equivalent to one absence.
2. Every student is allowed a maximum of nine (9) absences before he will be dropped from the roll,
whether the absences he/she incurs are staggered or continuous. It should be understood that this
is an allowance for possible absences due to illness or other reasons which are considered
reasonable and the cause of absences is beyond control. Hence, it should not be viewed as a
privilege or right.
3. A student who has incurred more than nine (9) absences for reasons beyond his control may be
given another chance provided (a) the teacher believes the student can catch up with the class
and (b) the case has been referred to the Dean for final approval.
4. A student is held responsible for the lessons/quizzes missed if by preference he gets absent from
class in favor of attending other activities and is considered unexcused. When the absence is due
to his/her representation of the school in educational, socio-cultural or religious activities , his
absence does not fall under former regulations, as such his/her absence is excused.
