I. OBJECTIVES
1. To be able to state the importance/purpose/function of a day tank for the diesel power
plant.
2. To be able to point out factors to be considered in the design of the fuel day tank.
3. To be able to discuss the effect of coolant temperature on the diesel engine
performance and how cooling loss affect the thermal efficiency of the engine.
4. To be able to describe the function of each component involved in the cooling system
5. To be able to discuss why there are cases that cooling tower is used instead of
radiator.
6. To be able to state the significance of calculating the heat balance for any engine.
7. To be able to discuss considerations in the determination of each item in engine heat
balance.
8. To be able to discuss how does waste heat recovery works and state the important
functions and the advantages (benefits) of waste heat recovery boiler.
9. To be describe the important components/parts and the design consideration in the
selection of waste heat boiler.
10. To be able to compute the given technical problem.
II. THEORY AND ANALYSIS
(based on the objectives)
III. TECHNICAL PROBLEM
A single-acting, four-stroke cycle, ______ cylinder diesel engine with bore and stroke of _________ has
a rated capacity (brake power) of _____ hp and rotative speed of _______ rpm operates in Pangasinan
to supply the 24-hour electric energy requirement of a big commercial complex. The plant uses day
tank that contains fuel with 26˚C temperature and having a density based on 35˚API. This power plant
has a cooling tower to lower down the water temperature coming from the engine water jacket to its
required temperature Air enters cooling tower at 28˚C and 50% relative humidity with a volume flow rate
of 600 m3 /min and leaves in a saturated condition at 40˚C while the water enters the cooling tower at
43˚C and leaves 30˚C. If waste heat recovery boiler is being installed and is considered to recover 40%
of the heat from the exhaust gas with other data as follows:
Fuel . . . . . C12H26
Excess air . . . . 25 %
Combined fuel rate . . . 0.265 kg/kw-hr
Generator efficiency . . . 94 %
Temperatures of cooling water . . enters @ 30˚C and leaves @ 45˚C
Exhaust gas temperature . . 300˚C
Ambient air temperature . . 28˚C
Specific heat of gases . . . 0.255 kcal/kg˚C
Temperature of jacket water used as boiler feed 80˚C
Steam generated . . . 150 kPa, dry and saturated
Heat recovery boiler efficiency . . 65 %
Determine the following:
a) The most economical size (height and diameter) of the day tank (in m)
b) The mass of hot water entering into the cooling tower (in kg/min)
c) The mass of cold water leaving from the cooling tower (in kg/min)
d) The mass of water circulating into the engine (in kg/min)
e) The percentage of cooling loss in the engine (in %)
f) The percentage of exhaust loss in the engine (in %)
g) The percentage of radiation, friction and other unaccounted losses in the engine (in %)
h) The % CO2 in the dry exhaust gases (in %)
i) The kg of water vapor formed per kg of fuel
j) The amount of heat from the exhaust gases (in kJ/sec)
k) The mass of steam produced (in kg/hr)
