3.1 Experiment Name: Implementation of summing amplifier using op-amp 741

3.2 Objective:

Design and implement a summing amplifier circuit using the MAA741

operational amplifier, and to verify its theoretical operation by comparing
the calculated and measured output voltages for different input voltage
combinations.
3.3 Components Required:

1. MAA741 (Op-Amp IC) – Used to implement the summing amplifier.

2. Ammeter (or Multimeter) – To measure the output voltage (V0V_0V0).
3. DC Power Supply – Dual supply of +5V and -5V for powering the op-amp.
4. Breadboard – For building the circuit without soldering.
5. Resistors:
o R1=10 kΩ
o R2=10 kΩ
o Rf=10 kΩ
6. Connecting Wires – To make connections on the breadboard.

3.4 Theory:

A summing amplifier is a configuration of an op-amp where multiple input

signals are added together at the inverting input. The output voltage is
proportional to the negative sum of the inputs, depending on the values of the
input and feedback resistors.

If R1=R2=RfR_1 = R_2 = R_fR1=R2=Rf, the formula simplifies to:

V0 = −(V1+V2)

Working Principle:

The op-amp is set up in an inverting configuration. When multiple voltages are

fed through resistors into the inverting input, the op-amp sums the currents caused
by these voltages. Using the concept of virtual ground, the op-amp adjusts its
output to maintain zero voltage at the inverting terminal, thus producing an output
that is the weighted negative sum of the input voltages.

3.8 Discussion:

The summing amplifier was successfully implemented using the MAA741 IC. The
experimental results matched well with the theoretical values. Minor deviations
were observed due to:

 Resistor tolerances
 Op-amp non-idealities (offset voltage, bias current)
 Measurement errors

The percentage error was calculated and remained within acceptable limits,
confirming the functionality and accuracy of the summing amplifier circuit.

This experiment demonstrates the basic operation of analog signal processing

using op-amps and reinforces the understanding of superposition in electrical
circuits.
