Public Speaking Text

A very good morning to the teacher, my fellow friends and to the viewers. I am here
today to deliver a speech entitled “Plastic Pollution”.

Recent studies have shown that microplastics are in the air we breathe and the food
we eat. In the ocean, plastic never biodegrades. It just breaks down into smaller pieces. The
tiny plastic is eaten by microorganisms, then the microorganisms are eaten by the fish. It
builds up to a food chain that leads to us. What we throw into the sea, comes back to us.
Plastic has harmful effects on us because of the toxic chemicals. It can cause cancer, birth
defects and other health problems.

How can we play a part in stopping plastic pollution? First, say “No” to plastic bags.
Did you know that one plastic bag could take up to a thousand years to biodegrade?
Supermarkets nowadays do not provide plastic bags. This could educate people to bring
their own recycling bags and reduce plastic bags.

Second, skip plastic straws. As a customer, use your voice at restaurants to refuse
straws. You can replace plastic straws with metal or bamboo straws.

Third, reuse glass or steel containers to make less waste. Keep a recyclable bottle
instead of buying plastic mineral bottles.

Finally, recycle. Some plastic items can be recycled such as bottles, plastic bags, food
containers and others. However, a lot of plastic waste cannot be recycled because they are
contaminated with food waste. Therefore, always wash the food waste before recycling.

Before I end my speech, let me tell you a story. One day, a boy was walking along a
beach and saw thousands and thousands of starfishes washed away on the shore. He
decided to pick up a starfish and throw it into the sea. An old man passing by was amused by
the boy’s actions. He asked, “Why are you throwing the starfishes into the sea? There are
thousands of them. How are you going to throw all of them into the sea? The boy calmly
replied, I may not be able to save all the starfishes, but I definitely made a difference to this
one, as he threw another starfish into the sea.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Never underestimate the change that you could make to save our Earth. We can start
by educating others, taking responsibility, joining a beach clean up and reducing plastic
bags. Thank you.
