ASHTON HAYES PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS

ISSUE 8 / SPRING TERM 2012 / THURSDAY 15TH MARCH 2012

CROSS COUNTRY The Junior children will be taking part in the annual cross country event in Delamere Forest tomorrow afternoon. Well done to those children who have been practising at home or who have joined me during the lunchtime clubs. Best of luck to you all tomorrow. Many thanks for the offers of help with transporting the children and supporting them during the afternoon. We will leave school at 12.30pm in order to get to the Forest in time. EASTER EGG TRAIL Preparations are being made for the Easter Egg Trail planned for next Sunday afternoon, from 2.00pm until 4.00pm. Following on from this newsletter is a poster and a competition for the children to enter, paper copies are also available from the school ofce. For the competition, we would like the children to decorate the Easter Egg shape in any way they would like to (paint, colours, collage, pasta, sweet wrappers...). We will display all the entries and judge winners in the infants and the juniors. Please return entries by Friday 23rd March to the School Ofce. CALLIGRAPHY I have had a request to ask if anyone can help with some calligraphy work. Does anyone have this wonderful skill and would like to help out? Please contact the school, if you can!

YEAR SIX FUNDRAISING You may have seen a number of posters around the school advertising this event. Next Friday (23rd March), Class 5 will be showing their enterprise skills by offering various activities to parents and children. The children have been given a small amount of money to invest in an activity with the objective to raise money for charity - in this case: Alder Hey Childrens Hospital. This will include car washing, sweet sales and games activities. We would grateful if you could send your children in with a small amount of money to take part in the activities. Class 5 will send some texts and iers out next week to let you know more details. FURTHER CYCLING INFORMATION Thank you to the parents who have expressed an interest in helping with the proposed cycling activities for the children in the Summer Term. Dear Parent/Carer

Bike It comes to Ashton Hayes Primary

Id like to introduce an exciting project that is starting at Ashton Hayes Primary this year. Bike It is run by Sustrans, the countrys leading sustainable transport charity, and helps more pupils to be able to cycle to and from school. Over the next year I will be working with the Bike It Champion and the school to promote cycling in the following ways: By making sure school has the facilities needed by pupils who want to cycle to school, including secure cycle storage By working with the local council to provide cycle training to help pupils ride safely and feel more confident on their bikes By organising promotional activities and events to encourage pupils to cycle to school By involving local shops, clubs and other organisations to help us By working with parents so that they can help support the project

At Bike It, we think cycling is an excellent way for children to travel to school, as it is good for their health, good for the environment, and it helps to develop independence and road safety skills. We focus on making cycling as safe as possible, and by reducing the number of cars around the school, we can help to make the neighbourhood a quieter, safer and less congested place. Nationally, we know that about 40% of children say they would like to cycle to school, but only about 2% do. The Bike It project aims to bridge this gap and allow children to enjoy the benefits of cycling. During this year, there will be lots of opportunities for parents to get involved in the activities and even train to become cycle instructors. If youre interested in helping out, please contact me via the school. I look forward to meeting you at one of our activities, especially if you come by bike! Sarah Diamond, Bike It Officer Chester.
