Tutorial 2

The document outlines a tutorial on density porosity in petrophysics, focusing on well logging fundamentals. It includes equations for calculating porosity based on density values and tasks related to interpreting log data and estimating oil in place. Additionally, it provides lithology information and density values for various rock types and fluids.

PE 221 – Petrophysics - Well Logging, Fundamentals – 2025

Tutirial 2 – Density Porosity

1. Write down the density response equation for ρlog in terms of ϕ, ρmatrix and ρfluid. Use
the figure 1 to help you. Then, re-arrange the equation to define the porosity in
terms of the 3 density values, ρlog, ρmatrix, and ρfluid.

Figure 1

For questions 2 through 5, refer to the figure 2 (next page) :

2. Compute the porosity from the density log at the five porous zones indicated (use
the simple equation using ρmatrix, ρfluid, ρlog you wrote down in Q1).
The log density values in each zone are provided. Use the appropriate matrix and
fluid density for each zone, these values are shown in figure 3.
(Assume invasion effects are negligible)

3. Identify the most likely lithologies in the 3 zones marked with ‘?’ from the
information provided below (fig. 3). Not all lithology types may be present.

4. What would you expect the density to read in a water filled limestone for the
following porosities: 30%, 10%, 0%? Indicate on the attached log with a vertical line where
the density curve would lie for these 3 formation types.

5. Estimate the value of oil in place using formula from the first
workshop session. Assume the well is vertical. Use the information in figure 3.
