Module 2 Turbulent Flow

The document discusses turbulent flow, which is characterized by random and irregular movement of fluid particles, leading to velocity fluctuations in all directions. It explains how these fluctuations contribute to a more uniform velocity distribution compared to laminar flow and mentions the use of a hot wire anemometer for measuring these fluctuations. Additionally, it includes an assignment related to the topic with a submission deadline before the end semester exam.

MODULE 1 – TURBULENT FLOW

TURBULENT FLOW:
Turbulent flow is characterized by random, irregular and haphazard movement of fluid particles and
different flow parameters show a random variation with time and space. In turbulent motion velocity
fluctuations may take place in all directions The velocity fluctuations in transverse direction are
responsible for transverse mixing of small masses of fluid. In the process of turbulent mixing, the
fluid with high K.E. is carried by the transverse fluctuations towards the boundary, while the fluid
moving at low K.E. near the boundary is carried away into the region of high K.E. This results in a
more uniform velocity distribution in turbulent flow as compared to that in the laminar layer.
H.L Dryden measured the random velocity fluctuations using a hot wire anemometer.
