The NHS: A National Treasure
During the pandemic, doctors and nurses around the world worked day and night to save lives. In the UK,
people wanted to show their admiration for these people. So for a few minutes every Thursday evening, at 8
o'clock, they would go out onto the street and make as much noise as possible. Some people shouted, some
clapped and some banged spoons on pans. This became known as the 'Clap for Carers'. Making all that noise
was a way of saying, "thank you" to the NHS (National Health Service), the organisation all those doctors and
nurses work for.
The UK government started the NHS (National Health Service) on 5th July 1948, a few years after the end of
the World War II. The idea was simple: to provide free healthcare for anyone in the UK that needed it. This was
the first time that any country ever tried something like this. In addition to free treatment, whatever medicine
you needed, you only had to pay a small amount, the same every time.
Nowadays, there are around 1.3 million people working in the NHS, including doctors, nurses, dentists and
other staff like cleaners and office workers. It doesn't just look after the UK's health, it also carries out
research to stop people getting sick in the first place.
Some people consider the NHS to be the world's best healthcare provider, and the British public would
certainly agree. In the future, the NHS may face some problems, though. The UK has an ageing population:
according to experts, the member of people over 85 years of age will double over the next 20 years. This may
be a challenge, but it is one that you can rely on the NHS to overcome effectively after over 70 years of public
service.

Foodbanks in the UK
It is a depressing fact that in today's UK, there are some people who cannot afford to feed themselves and
their families. Luckily, there are places these people can go to get donations of food to make sure that at the
end of the day they can have food on the table. These are foodbanks and the number of people using them
has risen by 128% over the last five years. According to one charity, 13 people get food from a foodbank
every second in the UK. These foodbanks usually open for a few hours every day and there is often a line of
people forming a long time before they open their doors. These places often offer more support than just food.
They give valuable advice about everything from money worries to health issues.

Foodbanks depend on volunteers and gifts of food and money. The volunteers collect food and hand it out.
The money helps buy even more food. Many supermarkets now have special areas where shoppers can
donate food and other household items that then go to foodbanks Some supermarkets give fresh food that
they haven't sold at the end of the day, too.

It still seems surprising that in this modern world there are people in developed countries going hungry. It's
even more astonishing to find out that some of these people work, but do not earn enough to pay the bills and
afford food. Hopefully, this sad situation will end and foodbanks will disappear from UK streets
