COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO):

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
CLO1: Perform practical activities using appropriate tools and techniques for concrete works
with safety awareness. (P3, PLO 5)
CLO2: Complete a selected mini project on brickworks through group participation.
(P5, PLO 5)

PROJECT 3: FLEMISH BOND

Objectives
Understand the different between Stretcher Bond, English Bond, and Flemish Bond.
Apparatus
1. Sand bricks
2. Bricklaying trowel
3. Mixing Board
4. Shovel
5. Steel square
6. Spirit level
7. Mortar 1: 3 (Cement and Sand)
8. Cut bricks
9. Pail
10. Pencil/chalk

Safety Precaution:
1. Wear safety equipment
2. Practise safety habits
3. Comply with all instructions and regulations

Procedure:
1. Prepared materials and work tools first.
2. Prepared a cement mix. A cement mixture is a mixture of cement, sand and water.
3. Determine the place, angle and type of brick bond to build a brick bond wall, the
bond we use is a brick English bond.
4. Cement that is ready to be mixed will be filled into the yellow pail.
5. Then, the cement is placed approximately equal to the original size of the cement
brick.
6. Place a full brick on top of the cement and level it by knocking the brick with brick
hammer.
7. Test the stability of the brick using a spirit water level.
8. Guide the back of the brick jointer along the cement joint betweeen the brick.
9. Start at the top of the wall and work down word by using brick trowel and brick
jointer, so that falling dust and debris do not affect freshly-jointed work.
10. Then, followed by a full brick as the second brick for the first layer.
11. Repeat steps 5-9 until the fifth layer
12. Flatten the cement around the brick using a wood plaster trowel.

13. Repeat steps 5-12 until the fifth layer.

14. Finally let it dry.

Introduction
Brick is one of the building materials that are used for construction purposes. Materials that
are used to products bricks are such as clay, sand, and lime as well as sand and cement. The
standard size of brick is 215mm x 102.5mm x 65mm. The purpose of brick bonds is to get an
organized and attractive arrangement.
Flemish bond
Flemish bond is bricklaying, an arrangement of bricks such that each course consists of
alternate bricks having their short sides (headers) and long sides (stretchers) facing outwards,
with alternate courses being offset.

Discussion
Suggest the types and characteristics of bricks that are suitable to be used in this project to get
a strong brick bond:
 The burning of bricks should be sufficient and balanced. The color bricks is dark red
with the sound of iron knocking if knocked against each other.
 The shape should be rectangular and the surface should be straight and flat.
 The brick surface is not cracked. The rate of water infiltration does not exceed 1/6 of
the brick volume.

Conclusion
In Conclusion, so many types of boarding brickworks but Flemish Bond is very popular
because easy for bonding and hard.
As a decorative wall, nothing beats Flemish bond bricks. Placing half-bat bricks between
longer lengths of brick adds a nice touch without detracting from the overall appearance of
the wall. A row of Flemish ties can be easily incorporated into a low garden wall for a classy
look.
