2.5 Transformations of Functions

Plot these on the same calculator screen:

1. f1(x) = x2

2. f2(x) = x2 + 2

3. f3(x) = x2 - 2

What happens to the graph?

This is called a vertical shift.

y = f(x) + c shifts up c units
y = f(x) - c shifts down c units

Plot these on the same calculator screen:

1. f1(x) = x2

2. f2(x) = (x + 2)2

3. f3(x) = (x - 2)2

What happens to the graph?

This is called a horizontal shift.

y = f(x + c) shifts left c units
y = f(x - c) shifts right c units

Plot these on the same calculator screen:

1. f1(x) = √x

2. f2(x) = -√x

3. f3(x) = √-x

What happens to the graph?

This is called a reflection

y = -f(x) reflects over the x-axis
y = f(-x) reflects over the y-axis

Plot these on the same calculator screen:

1. f1(x) = x3

2. f2(x) = 4x3

3. f3(x) = .25x3

What happens to the graph?

This is called a vertical stretch or shrink

y = af(x) when a > 1 is a vertical stretch
y = af(x) when 0<a<1 is a vertical shrink

Plot these on the same calculator screen:

1. f1(x) = x3

2. f2(x) = (3x)3

3. f3(x) = (.3x)3

What happens to the graph?

This is called a horizontal shrink or stretch

y = f(ax) when a > 1 is a horizontal shrink
y = f(ax) when 0<a<1 is a horizontal stretch

2. y = -(x + 2)2 + 3 6. y = (0.5x)3 + 2

Even & Odd Functions

Even functions are symmetric with respect to the y-axis.
If a function is even, then f(x) = f(-x).

Odd functions are symmetric with respect to the origin.

If a function is odd, then f(-x) = -f(x).

1 + x2

2. f(x) = 2x5 - 3x + 2
