Nissan Patrol Fault Codes
Diagnostics, reading and decoding errors
On the 61st Patrol, you can read and reset errors from various systems using the built-in
self-diagnosis system. Without the use of special equipment (scanners), it is possible to
read and reset errors in the engine, SRS system, automatic transmission, and on pre-
Restyle models, the ABS system, so in most cases there is no need to take the Patrol to
the service center and pay your uncle money for diagnostics. Let's consider each system
separately.

The information below is valid for Patrol with ZD30 engine.
An indicator of an engine error is the "CHECK ENGINE" lamp on the instrument panel (also
known as "CHECK", "engine icon", "throw out engine"), which does not go out after starting
the engine.
This lamp also functions as a warning lamp for the NATS (immobilizer). If the lamp
flashes when you turn on the ignition, this indicates a NATS malfunction.
To read error codes you need to do the following:
Turn on the ignition (lock in position "ON", do not start the engine)
Make sure that the CHECK lamp is lit. The system will be in the first diagnostic mode
(checking the dashboard lamps).
Connect pins 1 and 8 of the diagnostic connector with a jumper (clip, wire) and
make sure that the “CHECK” lamp goes off, then wait at least two seconds.
https://www.japan-carrepair.com/patrol/patrol-fault-codes/ 2/18

Install/remove the diagnostic connector jumper carefully. It must not be allowed to come
into contact with metal structures, because this may cause a short circuit.
If you still manage to short-circuit and the instrument panel goes out, then look at the 28th
fuse in the passenger compartment.
Remove the jumper. The system will enter the second diagnostic mode (self-
diagnosis), the "CHECK" lamp will begin to flash.
Read error codes by counting the flashes of the "CHECK" lamp.
The codes are shown as sets of two seconds apart. Each set consists of a series of
flashes lasting 0.6 seconds (long), followed by a pause of approximately 1 second,
followed by a series of flashes lasting 0.3 seconds (short). The first series
represents the first two digits of the code, and the second the last two digits. The
sets go in a circle, so if it was not possible to read the error code the first time, then
this can be done later, when it comes to it again.
For example, code 0102 (MAF) will be shown as one long flash, followed by a
second pause and two short flashes. If there are a lot of errors, then a good practice
would be to record the blinking of the lamp on your phone, so that later you can
safely count them and save the recording just in case.
To clear errors, during self-diagnosis (flashing of the lamp and reading codes), you must
again jumper pins 1 and 8 of the diagnostic connector for at least two seconds, and then
remove the jumper. The "CHECK" lamp "blinks" 5-5, which means code 0505 - no errors!

To exit the self-diagnosis mode and leave errors in memory, simply turn off the ignition.
There are times when the “CHECK” light does not light up at all, or lights up all the time
along with the glow plug light. This talks about problems with the ECM (engine computer).
So, if the glow plug lamp is constantly on and the car does not start and at the same time
you can hear some kind of buzzing in the injection pump and the relay is activated, then
the problem is poor-quality soldering of the microcircuit memory after the chip tuning
procedures, or poor-quality contact in the panels under the microcircuits, if any . were
applied.
A constantly burning spark plug light can also indicate a malfunction of the ECU relay.
If the “CHECK” lamps and glow plugs do not light up at all and the car does not start, then
the problem is in the power supply relay to the ECM unit, or its circuits and fuses.

Errors associated with electronic sensors and devices (including fuel injection pump) do not
always mean a malfunction of the corresponding components, because may appear as a
result of an attempt to start the engine with a severely discharged battery or when the starter
malfunctions, which causes a severe power loss. In such a situation, you need to replace or

charge the battery, check for power loss during startup, reset the errors and make sure they
do not appear again.
SRS system Fault Codes
The SRS (airbag) system error indicator is the "SRS" (also known as "airbag") lamp, which
is constantly on or flashing.
To read SRS errors, do the following:
1. Make sure the battery is charged.
2. Turn on the ignition (lock in position "ON", do not start the engine)
3. System in user mode. Observe the "SRS" lamp:
lights continuously for 7 seconds and goes out - no errors, no action required!
lights continuously for 7 seconds, after which it starts blinking at intervals of
half a second - the system is faulty, go to step 4
lights up continuously and does not go out - there are deployed airbags (belt
pretensioners) or a fault in the electrical circuits, go to step 4
does not light up at all - malfunction of the instrument panel or electrical circuits
Switch from user mode to diagnostic mode:
Option 1:
Turn off the ignition, then turn it on again and within 7 seconds press the driver's door
switch five times. If there are errors, the system will enter diagnostic mode and the "SRS"
lamp will begin to flash, indicating a fault code.
Option 2:
Turn off the ignition and turn it on again.
After the “SRS” lamp burns out for the required 7 seconds and goes out, immediately turn
off the ignition and wait five seconds. Repeat steps 1 and 2 two more times.
Turn on the ignition. If there are errors, the system will go into diagnostic mode and after 7
seconds the “SRS” lamp will start flashing, indicating a malfunction code.
SRS fault codes:
Front airbags and diagnostic unit:
0 (no code, only the 3-second start signal is repeated) - there is an error that was not
previously erased after the fault was eliminated or a “floating” fault occurred
1 - malfunction of the passenger seat belt pretensioner circuit
2 - malfunction of the driver's airbag circuit, incl. steering column cable
3 - driver seat belt pretensioner circuit malfunction
7 - faulty diagnostic unit
8 - passenger airbag circuit malfunction
Side cushions:
1 - right airbag circuit malfunction
2 - malfunction of the left airbag circuit

3 - malfunction of the right shock sensor (satellite sensor)
4 - malfunction of the left shock sensor (satellite sensor)
ABS system
To read errors you need to do the following:
Make sure the rear lock is disabled.
Drive at a speed of more than 30 km/h for at least one minute and stop.
Turn off the ignition and connect the 9th pin of the ODB-II diagnostic connector (4th pin of
the Consalt-1 connector) to ground with a suitable wire.
Turn on the ignition (do not press the brake pedal!). After three seconds, the ABS lamp will
begin to flash, indicating a fault code.
The fault code is determined by counting the number of flashes of the ABS lamp. The
codes are shown as sets, with an interval of three seconds. Each set consists of a series
of flashes lasting 0.6 seconds (long), followed by a pause of approximately 1 second,
followed by a series of flashes lasting 0.3 seconds (short). The first series corresponds to
the first digit of the code, and the second - to the second. The sets go in a circle for 5
minutes, so if the first time it was not possible to read the fault code, then this can be
done later, when it comes to it again. Up to three fault codes can be stored in memory, the
last one will be displayed first. The code sequence always starts with start code 12 (one
long flash, two short flashes), followed by fault codes. If there are no faults, then only the
start code will work.

To exit the self-diagnosis mode, disconnect the self-diagnosis contact from ground.
After troubleshooting, you need to clear the error:
We carry out steps 1, 3 and 4 to enter the diagnostic mode.
Disconnect the self-diagnosis contact from ground. The ABS light will remain on
continuously.
Within 12 seconds, we connect the self-diagnosis contact to ground three times for a
period of more than one second. The "ABS" lamp will go out after the error is cleared.
ABS fault codes:
Actuator codes:
45 - front left output solenoid valve
46 - front left inlet solenoid valve
41 - front right output solenoid valve
42 - front right inlet solenoid valve
55 - rear output solenoid valve
56 - rear inlet solenoid valve
Sensor codes:
25 * - Front left (break)
26 * - Front left (short circuit)
21 * - Front right (break)
22 * - Front right (short circuit)
31 * - Rear right (break)
32 * - Rear right (short circuit)
35 * - Rear left (break)
36 * - Rear left (short circuit)
Other codes:
18 * - sensor rotor
17* - G-sensor and circuits
61 ** - actuator motor or motor relay
63 - solenoid valve relay
57 *** - power supply (low voltage)
71 - control unit
* If one or more wheels rotate on rough or slippery roads for 40 seconds or more, the ABS
warning light will come on. This is not a malfunction. Only in the event of a short circuit
(codes No. 26, 22, 32 and 36), after repair, the "ABS" lamp also lights up when the ignition
key is turned "ON". In this case, drive at a speed exceeding 30 km/h for approximately 1
minute and make sure that the ABS warning light goes off while the vehicle is in motion.
** Code 61 may occur when the ABS unit is not properly grounded.

*** Code 57 does not indicate a malfunction of the ABS control unit, it only indicates the
fact of a power supply voltage drop.
Emergency mode Automatic Transmission RE4R03A
The automatic transmission goes into emergency mode in the event of a serious
malfunction of the electronic system. In emergency mode, the automatic transmission
always operates in 3rd gear, regardless of the selector position “1”, “2” or “D”. The
"POWER", "HOLD", "O/D OFF" switches do not perform their functions. When the ignition is
turned on, the automatic transmission diagnostic indicator lamp flashes for 8 seconds.
Emergency mode can also be activated if the car was moving in extreme conditions (for
example, slipping and immediately following it with emergency braking). In this case, to
return the automatic transmission to normal mode, you need to turn off the ignition, wait 5
seconds and turn it on again. The warning light will flash only once for 8 seconds, after
which the automatic transmission will return to normal mode. If the automatic
transmission does not go into normal mode, then it is necessary to carry out diagnostics
and count errors for further repair.
Automatic transmission diagnostics
Depending on the region and equipment, diagnostic algorithms may differ, and the
functions of the warning lamp are performed by different indicators:
Configurations with automatic transmission mode switch (POWER/HOLD) -
"POWER" indicator on the automatic transmission mode switch
Configurations without automatic transmission mode switch - "O/D OFF" indicator
on the dashboard
Australia (first releases) - "POWER" indicator on the automatic transmission mode
switch
Middle East (first releases, no "Overdrive" switch) - "A/T CHECK" indicator on the
dashboard
Before starting diagnostics, you need to warm up the engine to normal operating
temperature.
Further, in the text, by turning off the ignition we mean turning the key to the “OFF”
position, and by turning on the ignition we mean turning the key to the “ON” position
(without starting the engine).
Configurations with automatic transmission mode switch
Turn off the ignition, wait 5 seconds, then move the “A/T” switch to the “AUTO” position.
We turn the “Overdrive” switch to the ON position (must be recessed), move the selector
to the “P” position, and then turn on the ignition. The "POWER" indicator will remain lit for
two seconds.
We turn the key to the "ACC" (Accessories) position, and then move the selector to the "D"
position.
Turn the "Overdrive" switch to the OFF position (must be released), depress the
accelerator pedal fully and release it, then turn on the ignition.
