Tutorial Str Analysis-II

This tutorial sheet outlines problems related to moving loads and influence lines for structural analysis of beams. It includes calculations for shear forces, bending moments, and influence line diagrams for various loading scenarios on simply supported beams. The course is coordinated by Professors Mohammed Arif and Sabih Akhtar at the Department of Civil Engineering, AMU, Aligarh.

Tutorial Sheet for the Course Structural Analysis-II (CE-430)

Unit-4: Moving loads for determinate beams; Different load cases, Influence lines
for forces for determinate beams
Moving Loads:
1. A uniformly distributed load of 2kN per meter run, 8m long crosses a girder of 20m
span simply supported at the ends. Plot the maximum S.F. and B.M. diagrams and
obtain their values at section 8m from the left hand support.
2. Draw the maximum shear force and bending moment diagrams of a simply
supported beam of 12m span, for two point loads of 6kN and 10kN with 6kN load
leading, crossing the beam from left to right. The spacing between the loads is 6m.
State the maximum values of S.F. and B.M.
3. Determine the maximum bending moment at a section 12m from left support of a
simply supported beam of 30m span for a system of point loads of magnitude 8kN,
20kN, 20kN, 12kN and 12kN spaced 2m, 3m, 3m, and 2m in order with 8kN load
leading, crossing the beam from left to right.
4. For the beam and data given in problem-3, calculate the maximum values of
bending moment and shear force in the span.
5. Calculate the focal length of a girder of 12m span simply supported at the ends,
carrying a dead load of 2kN/m and a u.d.l. of 4kN/m for shear.
6. Solve problem-5 for a 3m long uniformly distributed live load of 3kN/m intensity
rolling over the beam from left to right, instead of a .u.d.l. of 4kN/m.
7. Two concentrated loads of 6kN and 10kN spaced 4m apart with 6kn load leading
cross a simply supported girder of 12m span from left to right. Determine the focal
length of girder if the dead load of the girder is 3kN/m over whole span.
8. A uniformly distributed load of 10kN/m and 3m long rolls over a simply supported
span of 16m.
9. Find out the maximum bending moment developed any where on the simply
supported girder of 20m span due to two point load of 30kN and 20kN spaced 4m
apart with 20kn load leading, crossing the girder from one end to another. Calculate
the equivalent u.d.l., which gives the same bending moment.

Influence Line Diagram:

10. Draw IL - diagram for shear force and bending moment for a section at 6m from the
left support of the simply supported beam of 20m span. Find the maximum shear
force and bending moment at the given section when two wheel loads of 10kn
spaced 3m apart with 10kn load leading, crosses the beam moving from left to right.
11 Draw IL - diagram for shear force and bending moment for a section at 6m from the
left support of the simply supported beam of 20m span and calculate maximum
shearing force and bending moment at this section due to a uniformly distributed
load of 1kn/m intensity and 8m long crossing the girder from one end to another, by
using the influence line diagram drawn.

12 A horizontal beam ABC, hinged at A, simply supported at B and the portion BC of
length 8m overhanging, and has the span AB of 20m. Draw IL - Diagrams for
bending moment for the sections D and E at 4m to the left and right of B,
respectively. Calculate the maximum positive and negative B.M at D and maximum
bending moment at E due to a u.d.l of 2kN/m intensity and 4m long crossing the
beam from end to another. Mention the corresponding positions of the load.
13. A beam ABC simply supported at A, B and C and having a hinge at D, 5m from A,
has equal spans AB and BC of 10m each. Calculate the values after drawing and
using their respective IL - Diagrams, of the reactions at A,B and C, shear force at a
point just to the right of B and bending moment at section 2m to the right of B, due
to a u.d.l. of 1kN/m intensity and of 4m length, crossing the beam from end to
another.
