7.. For the circuit shown, find the Thevenin equivalent resistance and open
circuit voltage between terminals A and B.

Solution:

Thevenin Equivalent Resistance, (Shorting the voltage source, Open

circuiting current source,
Converting the three 10 Ohm resistors connected in Delta to Star,

-----1 Mark

Thus, Thevenin Equivalent Resistance Across A & B,

RTH = 3.33 +11.67 = 15 Ohm

For Open Circuit Voltage, Vth

Using Mesh Analysis (method of inspection),

30 −10 𝐼1 −20
[ ][ ] = [ ]
−10 50 𝐼2 70

Solving for currents,

𝐼1 = −0.2143 𝐴,
𝐼2 = 1.357 𝐴
-----2 Marks

𝑉𝑇𝐻 = 10 𝐼1 + 20𝐼2 − 20 = 5 𝑉
Thus, Thevenin Open Circuit Voltage is 5 V.
