Cable gearshift system
Note: As the illustrations in the service literature are re-used for different variants, certain details may differ from
any particular engine. The essential information in the picture is however, always correct.
Cable gearshift system, construction
The system consists of the gear lever carrier/gear selector, which is provided with air for the range and split
gears. The cable gear shift system has two gear selector cables, which transfer force between the gear lever
carrier/gear selector and the control housing on the gearbox. The control housing is basically a control housing
from the VT2014/2514 gearbox, but the control housing has been modified to suit the cable gear shift system.
Cable routing
FH, FM
From the gear lever carrier/gear selector and the underneath side of the cab floor, the cables are run forwards
and around the cab tip centre. Between the cab tip centre and the gearbox, they are routed along the left-hand
chassis side. The cables are always routed on the left side of the vehicle. On right-hand drive vehicles, the cables
are routed past the radiator at the front of the cab. The cables are fixed to the cab and chassis by means of clips
and brackets.
NH
From the gear lever carrier/gear selector and the underneath side of the cab floor, the cables are run forwards
and past the cowl wall in the engine bay, down to the left-hand chassis member and then forwards to the control
housing.

Gear lever carrier/gear selector
There are three versions of the gear lever carrier/gear selector, two for GSS–RC (cable controlled range gear shift
system) and one for GSS–SRC (cable controlled split/range gear shift system) The air supply for range and split
shift shifting has the same pipe runs as previous production. The gear lever carrier/gear selector is fixed to the
underside of the cab floor, the cables are fixed forwards and underneath. The lower section of the gear lever
carrier/gear selector is designed differently in FH, FM-LHD, FM-RHD and NH vehicles.
Cables
The cables are of the push-pull type. The gear shift system uses one cable for lengthways movement and other
for sideways movement. The cables need no adjustment, gear lever position/gear control can handle dimension
variations of ±15 mm at the handle. There is a rubber damper at each end of the cables, for good gear shifting

quality.
The cables are easy to remove and install.
Control housing
Sideways movement and lengthways movement.
The control housing has two arms, one for sideways movement and one for lengthways movement, which are
linked to the gear lever carrier/gear selector by cables.

Balance weight and protective arch.
The control housing has a balance weight (B) to give better gear shift quality and a protective arch (A) to prevent
damage and to prevent the wrong gear from being engaged by mistake.
