Course Objectives:
o Educate students on interdisciplinary environmental science integrating natural and social sciences.
o Equip students with skills to analyze and manage natural resources sustainably, considering
environmental impacts.
o Foster proactive attitudes towards environmental conservation and pollution prevention through
activities promoting sustainable living.
Course Outcomes:
After completion of the course, students will be able to:
 Demonstrate an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of environmental studies by
integrating concepts from natural and social sciences to analyze environmental issues effectively.
 Identify and evaluate the utilization, conservation, and management strategies of natural resources,
considering their ecological, economic, and social implications.
 Analyze and propose solutions to environmental challenges related to biodiversity conservation,
pollution control, and sustainable resource use, applying scientific principles and ethical
considerations.
 Demonstrate proficiency in assessing environmental quality through fieldwork, laboratory
investigations, and data analysis, utilizing appropriate tools and techniques.
 Communicate effectively on environmental issues, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences,
employing scientific reasoning and evidence-based arguments.

Course Contents

Unit 1: Multidisciplinary Nature of Environmental Science


 Definition, scope, and importance of environmental science.
 The need for public awareness regarding environmental issues.
 Interdisciplinary nature of environmental studies integrating natural and social sciences.
 The role of environmental studies in addressing global challenges.

Unit 2: Natural Resources


 Types and Problems: Renewable and non-renewable resources, their significance, and associated
issues.
 Forest Resources: Use and over-exploitation, deforestation, timber extraction, mining, dams, and
their impacts on forests and tribal communities, with case studies.
 Water Resources: Utilization of surface and groundwater, issues like floods, droughts, water
conflicts, and the benefits and problems of dams.
 Mineral and Food Resources: Exploitation, environmental impacts, world food problems, modern
agriculture issues, fertilizer-pesticide problems, water logging, and salinity, supported by case
studies.

Unit 3: Biodiversity and Its Conservation


 Introduction to biodiversity: genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity.
 Biogeographical classification of India, India's status as a mega-diversity nation, and biodiversity
hot spots.
 Value of biodiversity: consumptive, productive, social, ethical, aesthetic, and option values.
 Conservation of biodiversity: in-situ and ex-situ methods, addressing threats such as habitat loss,
poaching, and man-wildlife conflicts.

Unit 4: Environmental Pollution


 Definition, causes, effects, and control measures for air, water, soil, marine, noise, thermal
pollution, and nuclear hazards.
 Solid waste management: causes, effects, and control measures of urban and industrial wastes.
 The role of individuals in pollution prevention.
 Disaster management: understanding and handling floods, earthquakes, cyclones, and landslides.

Suggested Course Based Activities (Any Two of the following)

1. Create posters, pamphlets, and digital content to educate the community about the importance of
environmental conservation and the role of individuals in making a difference.
2. Prepare a detailed map of their local area highlighting different natural resources (water bodies,
forests, mineral deposits).
3. Develop a conservation plan for a threatened species or habitat in their local area.
4. Develop a comprehensive waste management plan for the campus or a local community.
5. Analyze existing environmental policies and regulations related to pollution control.
6. Conduct a simulation exercise where students respond to a natural disaster (e.g., flood, earthquake).
