RATIONALE
The Student Internship Program is designed to provide students with
valuable hands-on experience, bridging the gap between academic learning
and the professional world. It provides students with the opportunity to apply
their theoretical knowledge in practical settings while developing essential
career competencies. The CHED Memorandum Order No. 104 Series of 2017
known as the Revised Guidelines for the Student Internship Program in the
Philippines (SIPP) underscores the importance of internships as a core
component of academic programs. This order ensures that students receive
structured, meaningful industry or field experience, which is intended to
enhance their employability by equipping them with practical skills that are
highly valued in the workforce.
In line with the guiding principles outlined in Article 1, Section 1 of the
CMO, the internship program is meant to provide students with an opportunity
to complement their formal learning with practical knowledge, skills and
desirable attitudes and to gain hands on experience in recognized Host
Training Establishment (CHED, 2017). Moreover, internships have become a
vital stepping stone for students transitioning from college to career. They
offer learners the chance to explore career paths, build essential skills, and
increase their chances of securing employment after graduation (Williams et
al., 2024).
According to a study by Zehr & Korte (2020), internships have been
shown to provide a deeper understanding of industry practices, allowing
students to refine their professional skills and become better prepared for
employment. This experience helps students gain a clearer insight into how a
company operates and how to collaborate effectively in a professional
environment, further enhancing their ability to transition smoothly into the
workforce as the result of their internships.
The purpose of the Internship Program is to help students develop
critical competencies and practical skills while gaining exposure to the
working environment. The CHED Memorandum Order No. 104 Series of 2017
highlights the program's role in preparing students for their future careers,
ensuring they meet industry standards and acquire the necessary skills for
employment. Internships not only help students apply classroom knowledge to
real-world situations but also facilitate the development of essential soft skills,
such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. According to a study
by Galbraith & Mondal (2020), internships experiences enhance the
application of the concepts taught in class, and aid in the career connection
opportunities for students. Additionally, the program offers networking
opportunities and guidance that foster their professional development.
Building strong networks was one of the other practical aspects of doing an
internship. These networks have helped students secure jobs as well as
switch jobs that offered better prospects and career progression. By doing the
internship, they had a much better idea about the skill requirements of the job,
which helped them make the career choice.
According to the 2023 outlook report from the National Association of
Colleges and Employers (NACE), employers identified communication,
teamwork, and critical thinking as the top three competencies for interns.
However, the report also highlights that the majority of employers consider all
career readiness competencies—such as professionalism, problem-solving,
and adaptability—as either very or extremely important for success in the
workplace.
The benefits of the Internship Program are numerous. Interns gain
practical experience that boosts their confidence and enhances their technical
skills, making them more competitive in the job market. A study by Utami &
Raharjo (2021) found that internship experience showed a positive and
significant effect on work readiness and significantly contributes to graduates'
employability, with students who completed internships reporting higher job
satisfaction and faster career progression. Furthermore, the CMO ensures
that internship programs are supervised and structured, providing students
with a quality internship experience. Interns also build valuable professional
networks through their exposure to industry professionals, increasing the
likelihood of securing full-time employment.
This practicum/internship/OJT portfolio serves as a comprehensive
record of the student’s internship experience, highlighting both academic and
professional growth. It provides a detailed account of daily activities,
reflections on weekly tasks, and evaluations from HTEs. Additionally, it
includes supporting documents as evidence of the successful completion of
the practicum/internship/OJT course from February 2025 to April 2025. This
portfolio not only fulfils academic requirements but also serves as a personal
and professional milestone, showcasing the knowledge, skills, and
experiences gained throughout the internship.
