Assignment-5

The document outlines an assignment for a course on Kinematics and Dynamics of Machines, consisting of eight problems related to forces, moments, and dynamics of mechanical systems. Each problem requires calculations involving forces, moments, torque, and other mechanical principles. The problems involve various mechanisms, including a four-bar link mechanism, a gas engine, and a three-cylinder engine, with specific parameters provided for analysis.

Assignment-5

Kinematics and Dynamics of Machines (AMN14101)

Applied Mechanics Department
(Even 24-25)

1. The bracket is subjected to three forces and a couple. If you represent this
system by a force F, what is F and where does it line of action intersect the x
axis?

2. What moment M12 must be applied to the crank of the mechanism illustrated in Fig.2
below, if P=4005 N. (i) neglecting friction (ii) considering the effect of friction.

Fig.2
3. Sketch free-body diagrams of each link and shown in Figure. Find the magnitude and
direction of the moment that must be applied to link 2 to drive the linkage against the
forces shown.

4. The dimensions of a 4 bar link mechanism are AB= 500 mm, BC=660 mm, CD =560mm
and AD=1000 mm. The link AB has an angular velocity of 10.5 rad/s counter-clockwise
and an angular retardation of 26 rad/s2 at the instant when it makes and angle of 60 deg
with AD, the fixed link. The mass of the links BC and CD is 4.2 kg/m length. The link
AB has a mass of 3.54 kg, the centre of which lies at 200 mm from A and a moment of
inertia of 88500 kg.mm2. Neglecting gravity and friction effects, determine the
instantaneous value of the drive torque required to be applied on AB to overcome the
inertia forces

5. A horizontal gas engine running at 210 rpm has a bore of 220 mm and stroke of 440 mm,
The connecting rod is 924 mm long and the reciprocating parts weigh 20 kg. When the
crank has turned through and angle of 30 deg, from the inner dead centre , the gas
pressures on the cover and crank sides are 500 kN/m2- and 60 kN/m2 respectively.
Diameter of the piston rod is 40 mm , Determine:
a. Turning moment on the crank shaft
b. Thrust on the bearings
c. Acceleration of the flywheel which has a mass of 8 kg and radius of gyration of 600
mm while the power of the engine is 22 kW.

6. The turning moment diagram for a petrol engine is drawn to the following scales:
Turning moment, 1 mm= 5N-M; crank angle 1 mm=10. The turning moment diagram
repeat itself at every half revolution of the engine and the areas above and below the
mean turning moment line taken in order are 295, 685, 40, 340, 960, 270 mm2. The
rotating parts are equivalent to a mass of 36 kg at a radius of gyration of 150 mm.
Determine the coefficient of fluctuation of speed when the engine runs at 1800 r.p.m.

7. A three cylinder single acting engine has its cranks set equally at 1200 and it runs at 600
r.p.m. The torque-crank angle diagram for each cycle is a triangle for the power stroke
with a maximum torque of 90N-m at 600 from dead center of corresponding crank. The
torque on the return store is sensibly zero. Determine: 1. Power developed, 2. Coefficient
of fluctuation of speed, if the mass of the flywheel is 2 kg and has a radius of gyration of
80mm, 3. Coefficient of fluctuation of energy, 4. Maximum angular acceleration of the
fly wheel.
8. The torque exerted on the crankshaft of a two stroke engine is given as:

T=15000+2500Sinθ-2000Cos2θ
Where θ is the crank angle measured from the inner dead center. Assuming the resulting
torque to be constant, determine, (a) the power of the engine when the speed is 180 r.p.m,
(b) the moment of inertia of the fly wheel if the speed variation is not to exceed ±0.5% of
the mean speed, and (c) the angular acceleration of the fly wheel when the crank has
turned through 300 from inner dead center.
