Angles 2

The document explains the properties of angles, including the sum of angles on a straight line (180°) and the sum of interior angles in a circle (360°). It discusses vertically opposite angles and their equality, as well as the behavior of angles formed by parallel lines when intersected by a transversal, highlighting corresponding and alternate angles. Examples are provided to illustrate these concepts and calculations.

1. The sum of the angles on a straight line is always 180°.

Example 3: AB is a straight line through O. Calculate the missing angle x.

x + 78° = 180 °
x = 180 ° - 78°
x = 102 °

2. Sum of interior angles in a circle = 360°

x° + y° + z° =
360° x°

Example 4: Find the measure of an unknown angle from the given figure.
x + 122° + 118° = 360°
x + 240° = 360°
x = 360°- 240°
x = 120°

Vertically opposite angles

When any two straight lines intersect, two pairs of angles are formed. The angles that
are opposite each other and are called vertically opposite angles.

The sum of the angles on a straight line is 180°

a + b = 180° and c + b = 180°
It follows that a = c
Similarly,
c + d = 180° and c + b = 180°
It follows that d = b

3. Vertically opposite angles are equal.

Example 5: In the diagram shown below, calculate the value of x and of y.

Since x is vertically opposite to the angle of magnitude 145° , then x = 145° .

Similarly, y = 35° (vertically opposite angles are equal)

Example 6: Calculate the measure of angles x, y and z. State reasons for your
answer.

We have a pair of intersecting lines, hence, x = 55° (vertically opposite angles)

Since the angles on a straight line add up to 180° , 55°+ y° = 180°
y = 180° – 55° = 125°
Since y and z are vertically opposite angles, y = z, therefore, z = 125°

Angles formed by parallel lines

Parallel lines have the same direction and so are always the same distance apart.
Any straight line cutting across a pair or more of parallel lines is called the transversal

4. (A) When a transversal cuts a pair of parallel lines, the corresponding angles are
equal.

(B) Internal angles are supplementary i.e. sum is equal to 180°

(C) When a transversal cuts a pair of parallel lines, alternate angles (also called Z
angles) are equal.

SOLUTION REASON

a=e ( corresponding angles)

c=g ( corresponding angles)
d=h ( corresponding angles)
b=f ( corresponding angles)

a=d (Vertically oppostie angles)

c=b (Vertically oppostie angles)
e=h (Vertically oppostie angles)
f=g (Vertically oppostie angles)

e + c = 180° (supplementary angles)

d + f = 180° (supplementary angles)

c =f (alternate angles are equal)

e =d (alternate angles are equal)
