Grammar Topics – Level four units 1 to 12
1. Simple Present, Simple Past, Present Continuous, Past Continuous
Simple Present:
Use: Things that happen all the time or facts.
with (he she it singular) we put (s es ies)
With plural (I we you they) we put inf
She goes to club. / I go to club
Past simple
Use: Things that happened and finished in the past with no exact time.
Example: He watched a movie yesterday.
Present Continuous:
Use: Things happening right now
Form: am/is/are + verb+ing
Example: I am eating lunch.
Past Continuous:
Use: Something that was happening in the past at a specific time .
Form: was/were + verb+ing
Example: They were playing football at 5 PM.
2. When and While
When: after it comes past simple, past continuous
Used for a short action/ or to show sequence.
Example: I was sleeping when the phone rang.
While: past continuous, past simple
Used for a longer action and specific time./ two actions that happened at the
same time in the past.
Example: While I was cooking, he was doing homework.
3. Will / Be Going To
Will: promises / offers / predictions with out proof / future facts/ quick
decisions.
Example: I will help you with your homework.
Be Going To:
Used for plans without arrangements or predictions with proof (things you see)
Example: I am going to visit my grandma tomorrow.
4. Indefinite Pronouns
Explanation:
Words like: someone, anyone, everyone, no one, something, nothing
Use: When we don’t say exactly who or what
Examples: Someone is at the door. / Nothing is in the box.
5. Used To
Explanation:
Use: To talk about habits we did regularly in the past but don’t do now
Example: I used to play outside when I was a child.
6. Question Tags
Explanation:
Use: To check or confirm something
Rule: If the sentence is positive, the tag is negative (and vice versa)
Examples: She is a teacher, isn’t she? / You don’t like coffee, do you?
7. Polite Offers with 'Shall' or 'Will'
We use shall in question form . (Shall I get you anything to eat?)
We use will in positive form. (I will get you something to eat.)
8. Polite Offers with 'Would You Like'
We use it to make polite offers
- After it we put to + verb / noun .
Would you like an apple?
Would you like to drink?
9- First conditional
We use it to talk about (future possibility – promise – threat)
- If + present simple (first action), will + inf (second action)
- Will + inf (second action) IF present simple.
If you study hard, you will get the full mark.
She will take a present if she studies hard.
