DEPARTMENT
PROCESS CONTROL MODELING AND SIMULATION
1. Explain the following terms
a. Chemical Process, Process control and its objectives
b. Input variables and output variables
c. Control loop
d. Elements of the design of a control system
2. Define the following process control terms
a. Process variable and Set point
b. Error and offset
c. Load disturbance
d. State equation and state variables
3. Explain the difference between
a. Manual and automatics control
b. SISO and MIMO control system
c. Feedback, feed forward and inferential control configuration
d. Experimental and theoretical approach for modeling
4. Consider the tank heater system shown in the Figure below. A liquid enters the tank with
a flow rate Fi, and a temperature Ti, where it is heated with steam (having a flow rate Fs.
Let F and T be the flow rate and temperature of the stream leaving the tank. The tank is
considered to be well stirred, which implies that the temperature of the effluent is equal to
the temperature of the liquid in the tank. The operational objectives of this heater are:
a. Keep the effluent temperature T at a desired value Ts.
b. Keep the volume of the liquid in the tank at a desired value Vs.
a) Design the feedback and the feed forward control configuration based on the necessary steps.
b) Show how is the information taken from the measurements used to adjust the values of
the manipulated variables. Discuss the effect of P and PI control modes.
c) Develop the mathematical model for the tank (show the necessary steps)
a. Indicate
i. State equation and state variables. Discuss it’s static and dynamic behavior of
the process by considering the change in the input variables (Ti and Fi).
ii. degree of freedom
b. develop input output model

5. Mr. X has designed two non-interacting tanks in series. According to his design
the heights and areas of tank 1 and tank 2 were estimated to be 3m and 4m with
1.0 m2 and 0.5m2 respectively. Along with the equipment design he conducts
some experiment to see the effect of pressure drop on the flow of process fluid. He
observed that there are two resistances to flow on the outputs of the two tanks, 0.5
s/m2 and 2 s/m2 respectively. His objective is to maintain the stability of the
process by avoiding over flow in both the tanks having continuous inflow and
outflow.
Design the feedback control system by considering the following points
I.Mathematical model of the process
II. Response of output by considering open loop system
III. Develop closed loop transfer function for feedback system with a
controller working in:
a. P mode
b. PI mode
c. PID mode
IV. For unit step change in the set point; calculate
a. Time constant
b. Damping factor
c. Off set
d. Period of oscillation
e. Decay ratio
V. Clearly show the stability of the feedback system with controller working
in:
a. P mode
b. PI mode
c. PID mode
Note: For all the cases, take Gm=Gf=1
