ETHICS- ASSIGNMENT
Reflect on the following situations and answer the question following every situation.
1.It is a reality that Philippines has a shortage of nurses in hospitals, thus, you volunteer for an extra night
shift to help with staff shortages, knowing it will be exhausting, but you want to ensure quality care
continues. Give an evaluation to your decision in light with Kant’s concept of the good will. Does your
action align with Kant’s view of moral worth? How would a Deontologist assess the moral value of your
willingness to help?
Answer:
In my opinion, volunteering for an extra night shift despite being tired shows my genuine commitment to
helping patients during the nurse shortage. I did it not for reward, but because I felt it was the right thing to
do. According to Kant, an action has moral worth if it’s done from a sense of duty, not just personal gain. My
decision aligns with this, because I acted out of responsibility to care for others. A Deontologist would agree
that my action is morally good, since it was based on doing what’s right, not on the outcome. So yes, my choice
reflects moral worth in line with Kant’s view.
2.You are a new nurse assigned in a high-stress emergency department. One of your colleagues consistently
remains calm, compassionate, and professional. Even if that colleague is in the face of rude patients or
chaotic circumstances. As an Ethics of Character, reflect on how virtue ethics would evaluate this nurse’s
behavior. In your response, discuss how character traits shape ethical nursing practice and how you might
cultivate similar virtues in yourself.
Answer:
In my opinion, my colleague’s calm, compassionate, and professional behavior shows strong character. Virtue
ethics would see this as a sign of good moral traits like patience and kindness, which are important in nursing.
Character traits shape how we care for others, especially in stressful situations. Watching my colleague inspires
me to develop the same virtues by learning, reflecting, and practicing them daily in my work.
