The lesson material this week did not surprise me as much as I anticipated. This is
because some of the concepts discussed were somewhat familiar from my previous Health Care
Related courses. However, I did come away with a deeper understanding of the definition of
health. According to the World Health Organization (2025), health is defined not only as the
absence of disease but also as a state of complete physical, emotional, and social well-being.
This broader definition emphasizes and serves as a reminder for me that health extends beyond
just physical conditions and medical diagnoses; it encompasses the overall quality of life
resilience and social connection is crucial. Each plays a role in our daily lives, influencing our
overall well-being and ability to function effectively in society. For instance, someone may be fit
physically but struggle emotionally, which can affect their everyday encounters and ultimately
The articles by Martin‐Howard and Farmbry (2020), Schneider et al. (2021), and Sokol et
al. (2019) have reaffirmed my goals and responsibilities as a public health professional. I am
committed to advocating for holistic, multifaceted approaches to community health. Rather than
oversimplifying complex issues or providing quick fixes, it is my duty and personal obligation to
recognize and address the imbalances, inequalities, and recurring injustices that affect health
outcomes. By understanding health in this collaborative way, I can better appreciate the
importance of holistic care and the need to consider all aspects of a person’s life in promoting
well-being. This reinforces the idea that effective health care should not only treat illness but also
I can effectively apply this knowledge to enhance my future personal and professional
roles by fostering collaboration among healthcare professionals. For example, as a patient care
coordinator and eventually as a NICU nurse, I will work closely with an interdisciplinary care
team that may include doctors, nurses, social workers, and therapists. This collaborative
approach will ensure that patients receive comprehensive care tailored to their specific needs.
