GW Assignment_1 (2)

The document outlines a groundwater assignment due in April 2025, which includes tasks related to a confined aquifer's hydraulic properties, such as calculating porosity, water volumes, flow rates, and groundwater velocity. It also requires proof of the relationship between horizontal and vertical hydraulic conductivity and the development of a contour map for piezometer data. The assignment involves both theoretical and practical applications of groundwater hydrology concepts.

GW Assignment – 1

1) The hydraulic conductivity of a confined aquifer is 0.7m/day. The aquifer is 0.05Km thick
and 500m wide. Two observation wells are located 1400m apart in the direction of the
flow. Heads in the well 1 and 2 are 100m and 92m, respectively. The void ratio and the
specific yield of the aquifer are 25% and 15%, respectively. Determine,

a) The porosity of the aquifer.

b) The volume of water that can be drained from the aquifer between the two wells.

c) The volume of water that can be retained from the aquifer between the two wells.

d) The total flow of water through the aquifer.

e) The actual groundwater velocity between the two wells.

2) A confined aquifer with a horizontal bed has a varying thickness as shown in the figure
below. Assuming the flow in the aquifer is essentially horizontal, determine the flow rate
if the piezometric heads at sections (1) and (2) are 15.0 and 20.1m, respectively (5).

3) Proof that the horizontal equivalent hydraulic conductivity (Kh or Kx) is always greater
than its vertical equivalent (Kv or Kz) for the same sample.
4) Four piezometers located 100m apart, in a rectangular form, bottom in the same horizontal
aquifer. Piezometer D is due south of piezometer A and piezometers B and C are to the
east of piezometers A and D respectively. The surface elevations of piezometers A, B, C
and D are 2125m, 2120m, 2110 and 2115m above sea level respectively. The depth to
water level from the ground surface in A is 25m, in B is 30m, in C is 30m and in D is 25m.

i. Develop contour map of the groundwater.

ii. Show the direction of groundwater flow.

iii. Compute the hydraulic gradient in the given aquifer system.
