Poor Justice System in The Philippines

The justice system in the Philippines is plagued by issues such as resource shortages, corruption, and lengthy court delays, which disproportionately affect the poor. A recent tragic incident involving a road crash highlights the disparity in how justice is served, as the wealthy suspect was released after paying a ransom, while ordinary citizens face prolonged legal struggles. This ongoing injustice underscores the influence of money, position, and power in the legal system.

POOR JUSTICE SYSTEM IN THE PHILIPPINES

Who here knows what a triangle is? It has 3 sides and starts from the bottom
upwards, whereas the bottom is wider than the top which is pointy. But how can we
relate this to our country’s justice system? A pleasant morning to all of you, I am
Francheska Klyn E. Cabigon, from Grade 11-Enthusiasm and I’m standing here in
front of you all today to talk about how poor is the justice system in the Philippines
and how does it affect the people living the country.

The Philippines has faced various challenges in its justice system. The system
has been criticized for issues such as lack of resources, a backlog of cases,
corruption, and delay in court proceedings. In the early hours of All Saints’ Day,
November 1, 2023, celebrations were silenced by a tragic road crash in Barangay
Bucal, Calamba City, Laguna. A family was torn apart when a Sports Utility Vehicle
(SUV) crashed into two tricycles carrying the Palupit family and another tricycle
driver with his passenger. The accident claimed the lives of Gilbert Palupit, the
tricycle driver, his wife Aileen, and their children, Maria Aleisha Gale, Alyssa Joy, and
Akisha Gleen. The driver of SUV, Alyssa Mae Abitria is now facing the complaints of
reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, multiple physical injuries,
multiple damage to properties at violation of the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving
Act of 2013.

Meanwhile, according to the Chief of Police in Calamba Laguna, the suspect,

Alyssa Mae Abitria has paid the ₱120,000.00 ransom and is now released in jail.
However, ordinary Filipinos encounter problems regarding cases they have to face
in court differently wherein they have to serve a longer time in jail that can reach
years before they can undergo legal proceedings, unlike Alyssa Mae Abitria who
killed 5 people because of being a reckless yet was able to get out of jail after
paying a ransom.

These are just one of the issues Philippines currently facing. The issue of
injustice for the poor has been a long problem in our country. The favor has always
been on the side of those who are in power and never on the side of the
unprivileged and poor. Hence, MONEY, POSITION, AND POWER are the main reasons
of the occurrence of injustice.
