ACI - Facade Shiplap Installation Instructions
ACI - Facade Shiplap Installation Instructions
1. PRIOR TO INSTALLATION Remove MD Facade Panels from plastic packaging. Some minor
damage to product laps and corners is possible during shipping, but this is generally easy to
work around or simply repair. Inspect panels as you are unpacking and stack the panels on
their flat face on a flat surface. Panels with minor edge imperfections can often be saved for
areas where panels will be cut such as corners, windows, and doors. Ideally, panels should
be unpacked and stacked flat 7-10 days before installation to allow any shaping that may have
developed from the pressure of the wrapped plastic packaging to release so that the panel
falls flat.
2. Choose a corner to start the installation generally at the bottom corner of a wall. If the
installation will be performed with a ladder, it is recommended to start installation on the
same side as the dominant hand of the installer so that the vertical lap will be easier to reach
from the ladder while holding a drill in your dominant hand. Orient the panel so that there is
a “under” lap at the top of the panel and a “under” lap on the desired side (see below image).
Trim the “over” laps off (areas shown in red) for the bottom corner piece with a saw (track
saw, table saw, circular saw). See below images for a bottom right or Right Hand Dominant
installation.
3. Align the trimmed corner piece with the bottom corner of the wall. Install screws through
the middle of the lap starting ~2” away from the end of the lap. See suggested spacing below
with screw heads shown in red. Recommended screws to drive through lap: Simpson
CBT08112 Wafer-Head Screw (Cross Cabin Supply can provide these screws with MD Facade
order).
4. Install headless trim screws at a slight vertical angle with the head of the screw below the
face of the screw through the face of the MD Facade panel (about 2” away from the edge of the
panel) and sink head of screw just past the face of the cork. See suggested spacing below with
screwheads shown in red . Recommended screws: Simpson FT07300 Trim-Head Screw
(Cross Cabin Supply can provide these screws with MD Facade).
5. Check the installed panel for any high spots in areas without fasteners (like the middle of the
panel) by pressing on the face of the panel with your hand. If you feel a high spot with the
panel where you can press the panel with your hand and it visibly moves and sit a little bit
flatter on the wall, apply pressure with your hand and install a Trim-Head screw at a slight
angle in the area.
6. Get a second MD Facade panel to install above the first panel. Orient the panel so the
“under” laps are in the correct position. Trim the side “over” lap off at the corner matching
the first panel below. Place the panel on the wall with the “over” lap at the bottom of the
panel covering the “under” lap on panel below and align the edges. Install screws in the
panels following steps 3 through 5.
7. The overall sequence of panel installation depends on the desired pattern of the panels and
accounting for allowing both “under” laps to be accessible for screws as each panel gets
installed. With a vertical running bond pattern the panels can either be installed column by
column (in a spreadsheet sense) moving from one side to the other, or in a stairstep
sequence. The vertical running bond with a stairstep sequence is shown in the images below.
With the stairstep sequence shown there is always one more panel installed vertically to the
right which keeps the “under” laps accessible for screws. See images below.
8. Continue installation following above pattern while installing screws following steps 3-5.
9. When you reach a place where you will be installing a final panel at the top of the wall or a
corner, take careful measurements while accounting for the width of the “under” laps and
aim to cut the panel within a 1/16” or less of the measurement to allow for the cleanest visual
finish product.
10. At windows and doors, carefully measure and cut the panels with 1/16” as mentioned in Step
9, and also look for nailing fins or flanges, flashings or beads of sealant that are sitting proud
of the flat surface of the wall that might prevent the MD Facade panel from sitting flat on the
surface of the wall. If a ⅛” thickness nailing fin is present, you can use a cordless router with
a 1” straight bit and set the depth to 3/16” (slightly more than the thickness of the nailing fin)
and route the back of the panel at the edge that will be over the nailing flange so that the
panel sits flat on the wall. If the nailing flanges/fins/flashing are present, it is recommended
that you maintain a 2” clearance with your fasteners away from the flanges/flashings.
11. At corners or areas where fastening smaller cut panels securely with trim-head screws is
difficult, VaproShield LiquiFlash (or other similar black exterior liquid flashing product) can
be used as an adhesive to provide an extra secure hold. (Cross Cabin Supply can provide
VaproShield LiquiFlash with MD Facade).
