26. The hardness of a metal depends on the strength of metallic bond. The strength of metallic
bond increases with the increase in the number of electrons contributed for metallic bond
Transition metals are those metals where the penultimate shell electrons also take part in
bond formation unlike alkali and alkaline earth metals. Alkali metals have one valence
electron and octet configuration in the penultimate shell. Alkaline earth metals have two
valence electrons and penultimate shell has octet configuration. The metals from Z = 21 to Z. =
30 are called transition metals.
(a) Sodium metal can be cut with a knife. Why ?
(b) Write the name of metal and non-metal, which is found in liquid state.
(c) Iron (Z = 26) is very hard metal when compared with most of the other metal. Justify its
extremely greater hardness.
27. Sahil performed an experiment to study the inheritance pattern of genes. He crossed tall
pea plants (TT) with short pea plants (tt) and obtained all tall plants in F1 generation.
(a) What will be set of genes present in the F1 generation. Give reason why only tall plants are
observed in F1 progeny.
(b) When F1 plants were self-pollinated, a total of 800 plants were produced. How many of
