assignment5_1Opt_SSP

The document outlines various linear programming problems related to maximizing profits and minimizing costs in different scenarios, including airline ticket sales, motor oil production, transportation logistics for TV sets, computer production scheduling, and task assignment. Each problem requires the setup of a linear programming model to find optimal solutions based on given constraints and objectives. The document serves as a practice sheet for engineering students at Alexandria University to enhance their understanding of optimization techniques.

Sheet 5: Practicing Linear Programming Models Construction

1- An aeroplane
Canceled problems can carry a maximum of 200 passengers. A profit of 400 EP is made on
each first class ticket and a profit of 300 EP on each economy class ticket. The airlines
reserves at least 20 seats for the first class. However, at least four times as many
passengers prefer to travel by economy class than by first class tickets. Determine how
many of each type must be sold to maximize the profit of the airlines? What is the
maximum profit? (Solve it graphically)

2- There are three different components involved in producing various grades of motor
oil at a certain company. The available quantities per day of each component as well as
the cost per barrel are summarized in the following table.
Component Max. Available /day Cost/bbl
1 4,500 $12
2 2,700 10
3 3,500 14

The mix of these components determines the grade of the motor oil produced (Super,
Premium, Extra). The company wants to produce at least 3,000 barrels of each grade of
motor oil. The component specifications and the selling price per barrel of each grade are
summarized in the table below.
Grade Component Specifications Selling Price/bbl
Super Comp. 1: At least 50% $23
Comp. 2: Not more than 30%
Premium Comp. 1: At least 40% 20
Comp. 3: Not more than 25%
Extra Comp. 1: At least 60% 18
Comp. 2: At least 10%

Setup a linear programming model to determine the optimal mix of the three components
in each grade of oil that will maximize the profit.

3- A certain company selling TV sets has three warehouses in Cincinnati (1), Atlanta(2)
and Pittsburgh(3). The supply from each warehouse is 300, 200 and 200, respectively.
The TV sets are to be sold through three retail stores in New York (A), Dallas (B) and
Detroit (C). The demands for the retail stores are 150, 250, and 200, respectively. The
transportation costs per TV set from a given warehouse to each of the retail stores are
summarized in the following table. Setup a linear programming model to minimize the
transportation costs.

From To store
Warehouse A B C
1 $ 16 18 11
2 14 12 13
3 13 15 17

4- The regular production of a certain company is 160 computers per week and with
overtime it can produce 50 more computers. The assembly cost is $ 190 per computer
during regular time and $ 260 per computer during overtime. The inventory cost is $ 10
per computer per week. The order schedule is as follows during the next six weeks.
Canceled problems
Week Computer Orders
1 105
2 170
3 230
4 180
5 150
6 250

Setup a linear programming model to minimize the overall costs.

5- The task assignment problem is to assign a set of people to a set of tasks. Each person
takes a certain number of minutes to do a certain task, or cannot do a particular task at
all. The data for a sample problem is shown in the table given below. The notation "n.a."
in a cell indicates that the associated person cannot do the task associated with the cell.
Set up a linear programming model to help the manager decide how the people should be
assigned to the tasks in order to minimize the total time taken to do all of the tasks such
that each person is assigned to exactly one task.

Task/ Task
Person 1 2 3 4
Person A n.a. 9 7 13
Person B 16 13 8 n.a.
Person C 10 n.a. 6 15
Person D 11 n.a. 13 17
