Method of Statement for Unit Masonry

1.0 OBJECTIVE
To define the procedure for the installation of unit masonry (concrete masonry units) for
the construction of walls and partitions within the project.

2.0 SCOPE
This method statement covers all activities related to the installation of unit masonry,
including materials, equipment, and work processes for the construction of walls and
partitions using concrete masonry units (CMU) within the project.

3.0 REFERENCE
3.1 Project Approved Drawings
3.2 Relevant National or Local Construction Specifications
3.3 General Industry Standards for Masonry Installation
3.4 Manufacturer’s Recommendations for Masonry Units

4.0 PROCEDURE

4.1 MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS

4.1.1 The materials used for masonry works shall include concrete masonry units (CMUs) in
various sizes and mortar, approved by the project engineer.
4.1.2 Materials must be stored properly in dry, elevated locations to prevent contamination
and damage.
4.1.3 Mortar shall be mixed in the correct ratio of cement and sand to meet strength
requirements as per project specifications.

4.2 SITE PREPARATION

4.2.1 Review and verify the approved shop drawings for accuracy before commencing
masonry works.
4.2.2 Inspect the site to ensure the surface is clean and free from debris before starting the
masonry works.
4.2.3 Ensure all necessary equipment and materials are on-site and prepared for use before
the installation process begins.

4.3 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

4.3.1 Set out the masonry layout according to the approved drawings and ensure the walls
are aligned with the specified layout.
4.3.2 Lay the first course of masonry units, ensuring full coverage of mortar and correct
joint thickness.
4.3.3 Subsequent courses shall be laid after ensuring the first course is level and plumb.
4.3.4 Mortar joints shall be between 10mm minimum and 12mm maximum in thickness.
4.3.5 At the junctions of walls and partitions, ensure proper bonding and use of wall angles
or other approved methods.
4.3.6 Masonry units must be laid continuously, with sufficient mortar to fill all joints and
ensure a secure bond.
4.3.7 For vertical walls, check the alignment regularly to avoid any deviations from the
required plumb level.
4.3.8 For stopping and resuming work, rake back half a brick or one-third of the unit length
to ensure good bonding with the next course of masonry.

4.4 QUALITY CONTROL

4.4.1 Inspect each course for proper alignment and joint thickness before proceeding to the
next course.
4.4.2 All masonry work should be free from defects such as cracks, voids, and misaligned
joints.
4.4.3 In case of defects, the faulty units should be removed and replaced with new ones.

4.5 CURING
4.5.1 Curing shall be carried out by sprinkling water twice a day for a period of at least 3
days after the masonry work is completed.
4.5.2 The purpose of curing is to ensure the mortar sets correctly and reaches the necessary
strength.
4.5.3 If curing is delayed, it must be carried out as soon as possible to prevent any
compromise in the work quality.

5.0 RECORDS
5.1 Material approval records for masonry units and mortar.
5.2 Daily inspection reports to verify quality and progress.
5.3 Work inspection requests for each course and final sign-off.
