WATER

The importance of water towards effective working of the human body systems
can not be well over emphasised. About 60% of the human body is made of water
making hydration an important part of ensuring we have healthy bodies. Without water
many vital parts body functions would be affected. The way fuel is to generator so is
water to the body.

Water is life, it is a friend to all and an enemy to none. It has existed before the
foundation of the earth.

BENEFITS OF WATER IN THE BODY INCLUDE:

*It quench thirst

*It lubricates our joints and keep them healthy

*It promotes a healthy body weight.

*It prevents ulcer and kidney stones.

*It prevents dehydration

*It aids in digestion

*It prevents constipation

*It helps to excrete waste through urination and defecation.

*It regulates body temperature.

*It helps to create and boost our saliva level.

DEHYDRATION

When there is not sufficient water in the body, one thing a person can suffer of is
dehydration. Dehydration happens when you lose more fluids than you take in.

TYPES OF DEHYDRATION
Mild: Taking of water and hydrating foods and fruits

Moderate: Oral rehydrating salt (ORS) to replace lost electrolyte

Severe : IV fluids in the hospital

SIGNS/DANGERS OF DEHYDRATION
✔ Thirst: Feeling thirsty is a clear sign of dehydration.

✔ Dark Urine: Dark yellow urine indicates dehydration. ( Medium Dark Yellow)

✔ Dry Mouth and Skin: Dry mouth and skin are common signs.

✔ Fatigue: Dehydration can cause tiredness.

✔ Dizziness: Feeling dizzy or lightheaded may indicate dehydration. ( Blood pressure to drop)

✔ Headache: Dehydration can contribute to headaches.

✔ Little Urination: Infrequent or dark urine suggests dehydration.


 If you don't hydrate during exercise it could cause: Cramps, nausea or heatstroke
( illness caused by overheating a person or animal beyond its body's capacity to
regulate internal)

 Kidney Stone: When you don't take enough water as the body needs, your kidney
suffers. And overtime compounds that supposed to leave the system via urine
will fragment and form stones at the kidney. This is the beginning of your
sorrow.

 Weight loss
 Breathing fast

 Confusion

 Rapid pulse

 Loss of appetite

Don't wait till you're dehydrated to drink water and replenish fluids.

SIGNS OF DEHYDRATION IN INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN

 Dry mouth & tongue

 No tears when crying

 No wet diaper for three hours

 Sunken eyes & cheeks

 Listlessness or irritability : Lacking energy, enthusiasm, or liveliness

If you experience most of these symptoms then go for test, a blood test and urine test
will be conducted. Urine test to examine kidney function and hydrating status and
blood test to check electrolyte imbalance ( regulate electric charge on cells & flow of
water across their membranes.)

Causes of Dehydration
1. Excessive drinking of alcohol

2. Being under the sun for a long time

3. Sweat a lot.

4. Exercise

5. Not drinking the required number of water the body needs by day.

How to prevent dehydration

1. At least 6-8 glasses of water a day. ( Don't include hydrating fruits, fruits and drink)

2. Drink more if you stay out in the sun for long or do exercise or naturally sweat a lot.

3. Eat hydrating fruits and foods such as: cucumber, watermelon, cabbage, strawberry,
spinach & pineapple

4. Monitor your urine color ( white yellow and transparent)

Of utmost importance don't forget make sure the water you drink is colourless, odorless and
well treatment to prevent something worst than dehydration. What I mean is that drink clean
water to start healthy.
