TEACHER AS A
LEADER AND
CHANGE AGENT
PRESENTED BY : ANGELICA C. BACERO
The concepts of leading and teaching are so
intertwined that every leader is a teacher, and every
teacher is a leader. The art of leading students is
one of the greatest challenges faced by today's
teacher. The process is intensified in a prison
setting where the environment for blending
leadership practices is complex (Hand & Penuel,
2013).
TEACHER AS A LEADER
Teacher leaders lead within and
beyond the classroom; identify with
and contribute to a community of
teacher learners and leaders;
influence others toward improved
educational practice; and accept
responsibility for achieving the
outcomes of their leadership
(Katzenmeyer & Moller, 2001).
TEACHER LEADERSHIP IS:
• A way of organizing learning.
• A way of understanding the connections between
knowledge and practice.
• A way of combining the explicit and tacit ways of
knowing.
• A way of learning the skills, abilities and capacities for
developing and nurturing community among peers.
A way of negotiating the tensions between privacy and a
new view community (Lieberman, 2013).

HOW A TEACHER
MAKES CHANGES
Thoughts
Words
Actions
A Teacher's Thoughts
• A teacher should be thoughtful of their students: their
emotions, their work burden, their feelings
• A teacher should also always think of what
improvements can he/she brings to help their students
• A teacher should always think of good
things about their students
• Example: maybe they already have a lot of
work, maybe they are tired, pity them.. etc
A Teacher's Words
• A teacher's words • Sensitive issues must
should be inspiring be avoided at all cost
(family, religion, race,
culture)
• A teacher should
also give comments
and criticism but
always be careful • Teachers should
with their words so give credit where
that they wont it's due
offend or hurt their
student's feelings
A Teacher's Actions
Should hold on to the saying
"leadership through
action" and "action speaks
louder than words"
Gives instructions, not
orders
•Should work on being a
leader instead of being a boss
PROBLEMS IN THE CLASSROOM FOR
GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING
Classroom is place where students
from different places and different
culture sit together under one roof.
Then problems emerge and there is
only one teacher standing ahead to
face almost 30 to 35 students. And
some problems become very sensitive
that lead teacher to counselling.
The problems are like:
Students Become overly Unprepared Students
dependent on the Angry Students
teacher. The Gum chewer
Aggressive Students The forgetful Students
Cheating Only Physical
Bullying Appearance
Dominance of Strong Noise Makers
Students
THE TEACHER SHOULD DO SOMETHING
EFFECTIVE FOR CHANGE
If a student
can't learn the
way we teach,
maybe we should
teach the way
they learn.
CONCLUSION
The importance of teachers as leaders and change
agents lies in their unique position to influence and inspire
both students and the educational environment. Therefore,
studying the teacher's role as a leader and change agent is
essential for future educators, as we will face multiple
challenges and struggles. This knowledge equips us with the
skills to inspire students and drive positive change in our
classrooms and communities. By embracing these roles, we
teachers can empower our students, shape and mold their
growth mindset, and create a more equitable and effective
learning environment. Additionally, we can provide our
students with more than just a quality education; we can
contribute to their holistic development.
