Chapter 1 Investigation Answers

Chapter 1 focuses on computation with positive integers using an abacus. It provides step-by-step instructions for addition and subtraction of various numbers, illustrating how to handle carrying and borrowing with beads. The chapter emphasizes repeated practice of these processes for mastery.

c i Start with an abacus displaying the number 11.
To add 7, we add 7 in the ‘ones’ column.
ii Start with an abacus displaying the number 2394.
To add 536:
1. Add 5 in the ‘hundreds’ column.
2. Add 3 in the ‘tens’ column. But as we do not have enough beads,
we add 1 to the ‘hundreds’ column and add 2 to the ‘tens’ column.
3. Then add 6 to the ‘ones’ column. But we do not have enough beads so
we set the ‘ones’ column to zero and add 1 to the ‘tens’ column.
d i Start with the number 23.
To subtract 14:
1. Subtract 1 from the ‘tens’ column.
2. Subtract 4 from the ‘ones’ column – but we cannot do this, so we
subtract 1 from the ‘tens’ column and then add 6 to the ‘ones’ column
(taking 10 and adding 6 is the same as subtracting 4).
ii Start with an abacus displaying 329.
To subtract 243:
1. Subtract 2 from the ‘hundreds’ column.
2. Subtract 4 from the ‘ten’s column – but we cannot do this, so subtract 1
from the ‘hundreds’ columns and add 6 to the ‘tens’ column (because
taking 100 and adding 60 is the same as subtracting 40).
3. Subtract 3 from the ‘ones’ column.
e Repeat the process in part c repeatedly.
f Repeat the process in part d repeatedly.
