LP - Maths - Sec2 12 May To 16 2025

The weekly lesson plan for Grade 7 Mathematics from May 12 to May 16, 2025, focuses on Place Value and Rounding, with a duration of 50 minutes per lesson across five classes. Key concepts include understanding place value in whole numbers and decimals, forms of number representation, and rounding rules, supported by visual aids and collaborative learning. By the end of the unit, students will be able to identify place values, read and write numbers in various forms, and apply rounding in real-life contexts.

Subject: Mathematics WEEKLY LESSON PLAN

12 May to 16 May 2025

Grade: Std 7

Lesson Duration 50 min/ Number of classes: 5 lessons/week

Unit / Topic: Place Value and rounding

Teacher guidance notes and key concepts:

 Begin with diagnostic questioning to assess prior knowledge.
 Use visual aids such as place value charts, number lines, and base-ten blocks.
 Contextualize learning with real-world numbers (e.g., population, money, measurements).
 Reinforce the logic of rounding rather than memorization of rules.
 Differentiate tasks to support varying ability levels.
 Encourage collaborative learning and math discussions.

KEY NOTES:
 Place value system in whole numbers and decimals
 Forms of number representation: standard, word, and expanded
 Decimal place values (tenths, hundredths, thousandths)
 Rounding rules and estimation
 Application of rounding in problem-solving

Terminology
 Digit: Any numeral from 0–9.
 Place Value: The value of a digit depending on its position in a number.
 Standard Form: Numerical representation (e.g., 4,506).
 Word Form: Number written in words (e.g., four thousand five hundred six).
 Expanded Form: Value of each digit shown separately (e.g., 4000 + 500 + 6).
 Decimal: A number that includes a fractional part separated by a decimal point.
 Tenths, Hundredths, Thousandths: Places to the right of the decimal point.
 Rounding: Reducing the digits in a number while keeping its value close to the original.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of this unit, learners will be able to:

 Identify and explain the place value of digits in whole numbers and decimal numbers.
 Read and write numbers in standard, word, and expanded form.
 Compare and order numbers based on place value.
 Round whole numbers and decimals to specified place values.
 Apply place value and rounding in real-life contexts.

Methodology (Teaching and Learning Approaches)

1. Introduction & Concept Building

 Review previous knowledge of numbers up to thousands.

 Use interactive place value charts for whole numbers and decimals.
 Practice translating between standard, word, and expanded forms.
 Explore place values up to billions and down to thousandths.

2. Decimal Understanding

 Visualize decimal values using grids and models.

 Demonstrate place value with money and measurement examples.
 Practice comparing decimals and identifying which is greater or smaller using place value.

3. Rounding Concepts

 Teach the “look next door” rule:

o If the digit is 5 or more, round up.
o If the digit is 4 or less, round down.
 Use number lines and estimation games.
 Practice rounding whole numbers (nearest ten, hundred, thousand) and decimals (nearest whole, tenth,
hundredth).

4. Guided and Independent Practice

 Worksheets with increasing complexity.
 Group tasks: sorting and matching numbers based on place value.
 Problem-solving scenarios involving money, travel, and population.
 Create and interpret number stories using rounded values.

5. Consolidation and Assessment

 Use formative assessments: quizzes, games (e.g., Kahoot, bingo).

 Application challenge: Estimate the cost of shopping items, round up/down to nearest dollar or cent.
 Reflective journal entries: students explain rounding steps and applications.

Differentiated instruction strategies:

Use color-coded expressions, step-by-step guided simplification
Pair work on textbook-style questions, scaffolded worksheets.
Allow students to respond with drawings, explanations, or equations based on readiness

Formative Assessment activities planned for the unit:

Students pair expressions with their factorised form.
one- and two-step equations on mini whiteboards.
students solve and graph inequalities on mini number lines (exit ticket)

Homework/ Assignments:
Work book, text book , worksheets and presentations.

Resources:

Text book, Whiteboard & markers,Simplifying fraction worksheets, Tables or grids for formula derivation,
Online tools or videos (e.g., BBC Bitesize, Khan Academy).
