Class: 3 year Date: 9/8/2020
Examiner: Ahmed AL Rubaie Time: 2 Hours
Attempt All Questions
Open Book
Q1] (4+4+4 Marks)
Answer the following:
1- In the condensation heat transfer system, Prove that the value of Reynolds number =

2-Classify the heat exchangers (don’t describe)

3- Sketch the different boundary layer flow regimes on a flat plat.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q2] (8+4 Marks)
Air at 33° C and 1 atm flows over 65 cm square flat plate71°C at a velocity of 2.5m/s .
The properties of Air at Tf are:
kinematic viscosity ( ʋ ) = 18.225 Χ 10-6 m2/s , Specific heat (Cp) = 1.007 kj/kg.° C
Thermal conductivity ( k ) = 0.02814 w/m. °C , Prandtl number( Pr ) = 0.703
Calculate:
A- Drag force , peclet number and Xcritical if:
NUL= 0.664 (Re)1/2 (Pr )1/3 , St Pr2/3 = Cf /2
B- If the flat plate is exposed to the free (natural) convection with same values of
temperatures and properties Calculate:
Rayleigh number. Also give only the relation between hx and hL to the flat plate
according to the natural convection.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q3] (13 Marks)
Air at 2 atm enter at 37°C across a tube bank consisting of (16 ×16) tubes of 1.75
cm diameter arranged in a staggered manner; Sp = 5.25 cm and Sn = 3.5 cm. The
incoming flow velocity is 9 m/s, and the tube wall temperatures are maintained
constant at 78°C by a condensing vapor on the inside of the tubes. The length of the
tubes is 1.4 m. Estimate the exit air temperature as it leaves the tube bank and heat rate.

Nu=C(Re)n(Pr)1/3
Constant (C),(n ) are used in the equation of Nusselt number for heat flow across tube
banks

(1-3)
Properties of air at atmospheric pressure.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(2-3)
Q4] (12 Marks)
Figure shows a double pipe counter flow heat exchanger, the hot water enters at 75°C
which used to heat fresh water at 15°C

Mass flow rate hot water = Mass flow rate of fresh water
Cp of the hot water 4295 J/kg .°C Cp of fresh water is 4180 J/kg .°C
2
A= 1.65 m U (Overall) = 625 W/m2.°C q(heat rate)= 35 kw
By using LMTD method calculate the outlet temperature and mass flow rate of the hot
and fresh water; also calculate the effectiveness of the system.
