CHAPTER 2: Input and Output

1) A- State one suitable application for each of the following

printers. A different application should be given in each case.
1. a-

• - inkjet printer: Printing high-quality photos at home.

• -3D printer: Producing a prototype part in an engineering

company.
b)Name another type of printer and describe one way in which it
is different from the two printers named in part a.
Dot matrix printer: It is an impact printer and is suitable for
environments where multi-part stationery (e.g. carbon copies) is
needed, such as printing wage slips in a factory. Unlike inkjet
and 3D printers, it is noisy and lower quality but can print
through layers.
2) Contactless debit cards are replacing standard debit cards. Some
countries are introducing contactless debit card transactions at
ATM machines. Give three disadvantages to the customer of
using these cards at an ATM.
1. Security risk: A thief with a hidden reader could steal card
information if they get close enough, without the customer
realizing.
2. Limited transaction value: Contactless cards usually have a
maximum transaction limit, making them impractical for large
withdrawals.
3. Accidental payments: There’s a risk of double-charging if a
contactless card is used both via chip and contactless in the
same session, or if the card is near the reader unintentionally.
3) In each of the following questions, only one of the responses
is correct. Choose one of the five options given.
a) c) keyboard
b) d)scanner
c) a) reading barcodes
d) e) dot matrix printer
e) a)(graph) plotter

f) b) laser printer
g) c) heat
h) a) CRT monitor
i) e) mouse
j) b) 3D printer
4) Five devices are shown on the left and five descriptions are
shown on the right. By drawing lines, connect each device to its
correct description.
1. Inkjet printer → Droplets of ink are ejected onto a sheet of
paper
2. LCD screen → Display that uses light modulating properties of
crystals
3. 3D printer → Produces solid objects using CAD software
4. Digital projector → Image from a source is magnified and
shown on a large screen
5. Laser printer → Electrically-charged powdered toner is melted
onto paper
5) Which ten computer terms are being described below?
a) QR code
b) Optical Mark Reader (OMR)
c) Sensor
d) Microphone
e) Scanner
f) Remote control
g) RFID reader
h) Laser printer
i) Dot matrix printer
j) Mouse

6 a)
i. Describe how a QR reader works.
A QR reader uses a camera (like on a smartphone or tablet) to
scan a QR code. The reader captures the image, and a special

app processes it by decoding the pattern of dark and light

squares. This generates data, like a URL or text, which is then
used by the device (e.g. to open a website automatically).

ii. What are QR codes used for?

QR codes are used to store and provide quick access to
information such as website addresses, app downloads, Wi-Fi
passwords, contact details, boarding passes, or product
information. They’re commonly used in advertising, ticketing,
and access systems.
6 b)
Give two advantages and two disadvantages of using QR codes.
Advantages:
1. Can hold much more data than a regular barcode.

2. Easily scanned with mobile devices without needing expensive

scanners.
Disadvantages:
1. They can contain malicious code (attagging), which may lead to
phishing or data theft.
2. There are multiple QR code formats, which may cause
compatibility issu
6 c)A touch screen can be used as both an input device and an
output device. Explain how this is possible.
→ A touch screen displays visual information (output), like
buttons or menus, and allows the user to interact by touching
those options directly (input). So, when you see something on
the screen (like a menu), that’s output. When you tap it to select
something, that’s input — making it a two-in-one device.
7) Give a use for each device:
• a. Keyboard: Typing text into documents
• b. Steering wheel or joystick: Used in games or simulators
• c. QR code reader: Scanning QR codes in tickets or ads
• d. Barcode reader: Used in stores or libraries
• e. Microphone: For recording voice or online calls
• f. Touch screen: Used in ATMs or tablets

• g. 3D printer: Making 3D models or prototypes

• h. Dot matrix printer: Printing receipts or in workshops
• i. RFID: Tracking stock in stores
• j. Chip and PIN reader: Paying with a debit/credit card
8) Tick (✓) three sensors used in a home alarm system:
•✓ Pressure sensor
•✓ Sound sensor
•✓ Infra-red sensor
9)a Fill the table:
• • Detects starting pistol sound: Sound sensor
• • Detects athlete leaves the blocks: Pressure sensor
• • Detects athlete crossing the finish line: Light or infra-red
sensor
9b) How to transfer photos to a computer:
• • Connect the camera using USB
• • Use a memory card reader
10) True or False:
• ✓ Exam answers can be read using OMR - True
• ✗ The PIN is stored on the magnetic stripe of the card - False
• ✓ The chip is read by the PIN reader - True
• ✓ RFID chip can be used for stock tracking - True
