Example 1:
Design a rectangular sedimentation tank for a flow of 2160 m3/d.
Determine the internal dimensions of the tank and the outflow
weir length. Choose suitable design criteria.
Solution:
Qd = 2160 m3/d = 90 m3 /hr.
Assume surface loading rate (S.L.R) = 25 m3/m2/d
Surface area (A) = Qd / S.L.R. = 2160 / 25 = 86.4 m2
Assuming a detention time (T) = 3 hrs.
Volume = Qd x T = 90 x 3 = 270 m3
Depth of tank (d) = 270 / 86.4 = 3.125 m ≈ 3.2 m
If width (W) to length (L) ratio is 1: 3 then A=3 W2 = 86.4
W = 5.4 m
L = 3 W = 16.1
O.F.W = 2160 / 5.4 = 400 m3/m/d < 450 m3/m/d
Vh = 2160 / (5.4*3.2*24*60) = 0.086 m/min < 0.3 m/min
Example 2:
Design rectangular sedimentation tanks for a flow rate of 24.000 m3/d
with the following data:
- Detention time (T) = 3 hrs.
- Surface loading rate (S.L.R) = 25 m3/m2/d.
- Length to width ratio (L/W) = 4
- Bottom slope 2 %
- Over flow weir (O.F.W.) = 150 m3/m/d.
- The overflow weir to be designed will have the geometry shown
below.
Solution

Qd = 24000 m3/d = 1000 m3/hr.

Volume of tanks = 1000 x 3 = 3000 m3.
Take number of tanks =2 tanks.
Surface loading rate (S.L.R)= 25 = Qd / area of tanks
25= Qd / 2(WXL) = 24000/ 2 x(4 W2)
W = 10.95 ≈ 11.0 m, L=44 m
Depth of tank = 3000 / (2 x 11 x 44) = 3.1 m
Adopted dimensions of sedimentation tank are
L = 44 m
W = 11 m
H = 3.1 +0.4 m (free board) = 3.5 m
Total weir length required =24000 / (2 x 150) = 80 m
Actual width = 11 m.
Number of finger weirs of length 3.6 m = 80 / (3.6 x 2) = 11 m.
Width of finger weir = 11 / (2x11) = 0.5 m
