1)- ( 5 marks )
Select a product that can be made from one , two or more of the basic materials families (
metals, polymers, ceramics and composites ).
a)- Describe briefly the function of the product.
b)-What properties would be required for this product to perform its function ?
c)- What materials groups might provide reasonable candidates for your product?
d)- With the aid of sketches, what processes do you recommended for producing this product?

2)- (15 marks)

a )- Give an explanation of the following terms;


- Glass.
- Calendaring.
- Powder metallurgy.
- Blending.
- Polymerization .
- Preliminary.

b)- What is meant by powder classification, and what is the importance of this operation to
produce successful product .

c)- What are difference in chemical composition and physical properties of thermoplastic and
thermosetting resins ?

3)- (15 marks)


a)-Give reasons;
- High melting temperature of ceramics compared to metal and polymers.
- Most ceramic products are designed to be single piece structures.
- Filler and lubricant added to resins.
-Transfer molding and hot compression molding processes not recommend for
thermoplastics .
- Sintering usually accomplished in controlled atmosphere.

b) – What are the dominant properties of refractories? List some of their types and
applications ?
c)- Name three metal powder products that cannot be made by other processes, why?

4)- (15 marks)


a)- What are the common methods for joining plastics and ceramics?
b) What are the properties of plastics and ceramics that affect machinability?
c)- What is meant by impregnation and what is its purpose?
d)- What is meant by;
- Infiltration.
- Coining and sizing.
- Apparent density.

5)- (15 marks )


a)- Can thermosetting compounds be easily extruded into tubes and rods? Why?
b) - List the advantages of plastic parts over metal parts and vice versa.

c)- State what you consider to be the most important guidelines when designing for plastics
products?
d)- With the aid of sketches differentiate between blow molding and rotational molding ?

6)- (15 marks)

a)- What is the approximate density in Ib/in3 of a part that is molded from a powder having
density of 100 Ib/ft3.

b)- A plastic bush made in different ways is subject to the following costs. For what quantities
should each method be used.
