When compared to the countryside, urban areas tend to have superior

infrastructure, healthcare, education, transportation, and digital connectivity.

These provide all the basic needs for a person to live in. Having access to these
facilities can make daily tasks more convenient and enhance the quality of life.
1. Healthcare facilities:
-Cities have a denser network of hospitals compared to the countryside. For
example, in Hanoi, within a 5km radius of the center, people can access over 10
hospitals and clinics, such as Viet Duc and Bach Mai hospitals. According to
Hanoi’s Department of Health, there are 696 hospitals in the city center, but
only 40 in the suburbs, making healthcare access more challenging in rural
areas.
-Medical insurance system in megacities tends to develop rapidly. In Hanoi and
Ho Chi Minh, the percentage of people buying healthcare insurance is 90%, but
in countryside like Ba Vi and Thuong Tin, the percentage is just 75-80%. If you
want to earn money to buy this to help you to approach better to the healthcare
service and save yourself, come to cities to find better job prospects.
-Cities tend to have better healthcare facilities, offering residents access to
modern medical technology and specialized care. The World Health
Organization reports that people in urban areas tend to have higher life
expectancies, partly due to better access to healthcare services. In OECD
countries, life expectancy is on average 2-3 years higher in urban areas
compared to rural ones.
2. Transportation Systems
Public transportation in cities is typically more extensive and efficient than in
rural areas, allowing residents to travel easily without relying on personal
vehicles. You can go to work safer on plain roads, and you can travel faster,
too. If you want to eat food, you can just order it and it will be on your house’s
doorstep in 5 minutes.
• Statistics: From “Transport of London”, London has over 270 underground
train stations and 9 night bus routes, which serve 4 million passengers each day.
Hong Kong’s MTR also serves over 5 million passengers each day with the
accurate percentage up to 99,9%. Compared to the countryside, it often lacks
such systems. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 43% of
rural Americans do not have access to public transportation, forcing them to
rely on personal vehicles, which can be costly and less eco-friendly. The World
Bank reports that over 50% of rural roads in India are unpaved, limiting
accessibility and mobility.
So, in urgent situations, you can travel faster. You may say that traffic jam can
stop you, but actually, it happens on motorways, too. I think that some of you
have to spend a lot of time going to work from the countryside to the city, right?
3. Educational Facilities
Urban areas offer better access to a variety of educational institutions, including
top-tier universities, international schools, and specialized training centers. This
help students approach new learning styles from different teachers from
different places. You can also learn without worrying about your family
financial problems. You can also meet new people from diverse cultures and
study with the help of internet and modern facilities.
• Statistics: According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO), 75% of the world’s top-ranked universities
are located in urban areas, particularly in cities like London, New York, and
Sydney. But in the countryside, access to quality education can be limited. For
instance, India’s countryside has over 50% of its students in government-run
schools that often face shortages of teachers, especially in specialized subjects
like science and mathematics.
4.Digital Connectivity:
With fast and reliable internet connection, living in the cities enables us to
touch base our family and friends. You can work independently and finish your
work.
Statistics: According to Cisco’s 2021 Annual Internet Report, urban areas have
significantly higher internet penetration and faster speeds compared to rural
regions. For example, in New York, internet speeds can exceed 100 Mbps,
while in rural areas, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
reports that nearly 23 million Americans in rural areas do not have access to
high-speed internet.
• Example of cities: Singapore has a 98% internet penetration rate.
