What is software?
● The term software refers to the programs or instructions used to tell the
computer hardware what to do. A software needs to be installed on the
computer.
● Computer can’t perform any task without software
● Different software are used to solve different problems

Types of software
● Computer uses two basic types of software
1.Application software
2.System software
Application software:
● Application software consists of programs designed to allow people to perform
specific tasks using a computer
Examples: Creating letters, preparing budgets, managing inventory and
customer databases, playing games, watching videos, listening to music,
scheduling appointments, editing digital photographs, designing homes,
viewing Web pages, burning DVDs, and exchanging e-mail.
Forms of application software
Packaged software: It is copyrighted available for different types of users.It is not
developed for a particular user or organization. E.g Word processing,spread sheet
etc.
Custom software: It is designed for a particular customer or organisation. It Is
developed to meet the exact requirement Of a particular customer or organisation.
Cost of custom software is more than packaged software. E.g ; a software particular
for university
Shareware software: It is copyrighted software That is available free of cost For a
limited time period . The user need to purchase it If he want to use it after the trial
period. E.g; a large no of software available on internet.
Freeware software: It is copyrighted software that is available free of cost for
unlimited period . E.g ; YouTube

hardware component

● Printing a document
Operating system
● An operating system is a set of programs that manages
all computer components and operations
● A computer can’t do any thing without any operating
system. It must installed on every computer
● It acts as an interface between the computer user and
the hardware
● Examples
● Microsoft windows
● Linux
● Mac O.S
Types of operting system
1. Stand-alone O.S : A stand alone O.S is self- contained O.S that can run on a single
computer or device without needing a network Or external connections

MS- docs , Linux , mac O.s
2. Server O.S : A server o.s is a type of o.s designed to manage and provide access to
network resources such as files , printers and applications e.g: windows server, mac
os server
3. Embedded O.S : A type of software that is specifically designed to control and interact
with hardware components in an embedded system such as sensors,
microcontrollers e.g: traffic light control system , GPS navigation system, mobile
phone baseband software
Utility programs
● A software application that performs specific
maintenance or management tasks on a
computer system, such as disk management,
system opitimizaton,
● Examples: disk cleanup , c- cleaner , Norton
antivirus
