Transformer Notes

Definition:

A transformer is a static electrical device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another with a

change in voltage/current and without changing the frequency.

Working Principle:

It is based on Mutual Induction. When an AC current flows through the primary coil, it generates alternating

magnetic flux. This flux links with the secondary coil and induces EMF in it according to Faradays Law of

Electromagnetic Induction.

Types of Transformers:

1. Based on Construction:

- Core Type

- Shell Type

2. Based on Purpose:

- Step-up Transformer (Increases voltage)

- Step-down Transformer (Decreases voltage)

3. Based on Supply:

- Single Phase

- Three Phase

4. Based on Use:

- Power Transformer (High voltage, transmission)

- Distribution Transformer (Lower voltage, local distribution)

- Instrument Transformer (CT & PT)
