B) Analysis and Design of Columns

1. Considering the behavior of the frame in its own plane only (Fig. P1), classify columns AB
and CD as long or short if all members are 300mm deep normal to the plane of the frame, E
is the same for both beams and columns.

2. Determine the effective slenderness ratio of column AB in Fig. P2 below with respect to
bending in the plane of the frame only. Frame is free to side sway in its own plane. Both
column and beam have rectangular cross section and the same E.

3. Design a tie column to sustain an axial force from DL = 100 KN and LL = 250 KN with a
live load moment of 80 KNm and dead load moment of 60 KNm. Assume C – 25 and steel S-
300, class I works are used. Neglect all the effects and assume b = 250 mm.

4. Determine the design axial load capacity P d of a square column of size 400mm, reinforced
with 8 26, evenly distributed all along each side and e dx = 80mm, edy = 120mm. Consider
concrete C-25, steel S-400 and class I work.

5. Design a uniaxially eccentrically loaded braced rectangular column for the following data.
Deisgn axial load, Pda = 1500 KN
Design unixial moment, Mdx = 250 KNm
Unsupported length, L = 3.5m
Effective lengths Lex = 3.0m and Ley = 2.75m.
Grade of concrete: C-25 and grade of steel: S-400.

6. Design a biaxially eccentrically loaded braced rectangular column for the following data.
Design axial load, Pda = 1500 KN
Design biaxial moments, Mdx = 200 KNm and Mdy = 100 KNm
Unsupported length, L = 3.5m
Efective length Lex = 3.0m and Ley = 2.75m
Grade of concrete: C-25 and grade of steel: S-400.

7. The column in Fig. P7 is subjected to axial load and bending moment causing bending about
an axis parallel to that of the rows of bars. What moment would cause the column to fail if
the axial load applied simultaneously was 2200 KN ? Material strengths are C-30 and S-400.

8. Construct the interaction diagram relating Psd to Msd for the building column shown in Fig. P8
below. Bending will be about the axis a-a. Calculate the specific coordinates for concentric
loading (e = 0), for Pb (at balanced failure), and at least three other points, well chosen on the
curve. Material strengths are C-40 and S-400.
