B. Description
C. Compliance
Category 2
CFM recommends that you do this Service Bulletin as soon as possible without
effect on revenue service but before the intervals mentioned below.
. Do this Service Bulletin within 800 flight hours after 45,000 hours time since
new (TSN) or time since installation of an overhauled HPC VSV system
that is post-CFM56-7B S/B 72-0581 or post-CFM56-7B S/B 72-0665 and
pre-CFM56-7B S/B 72-0958.
. For CFM56-7B engines over 45,000 hours TSN or time since overhaul at the
time of this Service Bulletin issuance, do the inspection within 12 months.
NOTE 1: The reinspection interval depends on the amount of distress found. Refer to
paragraph 3., ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS.
Impact C
This Service Bulletin is offered to improve the reliability or performance of your CFM
product, or to help prevent the occurrence of the event or condition described in this
Service Bulletin. If the operator elects not to participate in the bulletin, that decision
will be taken into consideration by CFM in evaluating future product performance
issues that may arise in the operator’s fleet.
D. Concurrent Requirements
None.
E. Reason
(1) Objective:
To improve reliability.
(2) Condition:
The HPC stage 3 stator inner honeycomb seal aft J-hook can contact the
stage 4 rotor and blades, causing wear. The complete wear-through of the
J-hook can lead to the liberation of a radial retention (straight) pin.
(3) Cause:
(4) Inspection:
This inspection consists of a flexible BSI of the HPC stage 3 aft inner shroud
to determine engine serviceability.
(5) Substantiation:
F. Approval
The technical content of this Service Bulletin is approved by the FAA and under the
Authority of DOA No. EASA.21J.086.
G. Manpower
After you get access to the HPC, you will need approximately 1 man-hour to do the
inspection portion of this Service Bulletin.
J. Publications Affected
None.
K. Interchangeability
Not applicable.
L. Software Accomplishment Summary
Not applicable.
2. MATERIAL INFORMATION

D. Parts Disposition
None.
(1) Fixtures, tools, test, and support equipment (use specified tools or equivalent):
. Use a 0.3125 inch (7,938 mm) outer diameter (OD) plastic tube
approximately 7.0 inches (178 mm) in length. Bend the last 1.00 inch (25,4
mm) to a 30 degree angle.
3. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS
A. Flexible BSI of the HPC Stage 3 VSV Aft Side of the Inner Shrouds
(1) Do an inspection of the aft side of the stage 3 HPC VSV J-hooks. Refer to
Figure 1 and do as follows:
NOTE 1: It is necessary to do an inspection of the 6:00 and 12:00 o′clock
positions.
NOTE 2: If the clearance between the leading edge (LE) area of the blades
and the trailing edge (TE) area of the HPC VSV inner shrouds is not
sufficient, a 4 mm flexible borescope is recommended.
NOTE 3: The distance from the S4 stage 3 borescope plug port to the 12:00
o′clock position {[counterclockwise aft looking forward (ALF)]}
is approximately 26.00 inches (660,4 mm). The distance to the
6:00 o′clock position (counterclockwise ALF) inspection area is
approximately 53.00 inches (1.346,2 mm).
(a) Use the 856A1323 resolution-borescope monitor to make sure that the
fiber scope set is serviceable.
(b) Actuate the VSV system until the lever of the stage 3 VSV arms
becomes parallel with the HPC case split line. Refer to the Boeing
737-600/700/800/900 AMM, 75-31-00, VSV ACTUATION SYSTEM -
MANUAL OPERATION, TASK 75-31-00-790-801-F00.
(c) Remove the S4 stage 3 borescope plug to do an inspection of the
clearance between TE area of the stage 3 stator vanes and LE area of
the stage 4 rotor blades.
(e) Put the locally manufactured guide (optional) into the borescope port
and turn it to point the flexible borescope between stage 3 stator vanes,
in the direction of the LE area of the stage 4 rotor blades as follows:
1 Put the flexible borescope probe and push it into the area aft of the
stage 3 stator vanes until it travels circumferentially counterclockwise
around the HPC flowpath, ALF.
2 If possible, put the scope in the clearance below the TE area of the
blade platforms to get a closer view.
NOTE 1: The probe will go up over the 3:00 o′clock position, bend
around over the 12:00 o′clock position, and then head down
past the 9:00 o′clock position to the 6:00 o’clock position.
3 Look for contact and/or missing metal of the J-hook that exposes the
rail of the inner shroud. Slowly pull the flex scope out of the port to
look for this missing material as specified.
2 If the J-hook exhibits contact, but not completely through and less
than half of one shroud in length (Figure 2), do the inspection again
within 800 hours.
3 If the J-hook exhibits contact, but not completely through and more
than half of one shroud in length (Figure 2), measure the remaining
thickness of the J-hook seal and do as follows:
NOTE: This measurement is only possible at the end of the seal.
(g) Slowly pull the flex scope back out of the port after the inspection is
complete.
(h) Install again the S4 stage 3 borescope plug. Refer to the Boeing
737-600/700/800/900 AMM, 72-00-00, HP COMPRESSOR BLADES
BORESCOPE INSPECTION, TASK 72-00-00-200-804-F00.
