Prehistoric Era

Early humans began to carve their tools out of bones and stones, and paint images inside
the caves. These images were often animals drawn with great detail. However, The human
figures were in stick figures. The people during those years were nomadic. They lived by
hunting animals, and materials for their weapons and tools
Rock Art
-First and most primitive form of prehistoric art.
3 types of Rock Art
Earth Figures- Engraved into the ground
Petrogylyphic- carved into the rock surface. image created by removing part of a rock
surface by incising, picking, carving, or abrading

Pictograph- painted onto the surface. In the prehistoric art, the term “pictograph” or
“pictogram” (derived from the latin “pictus” meaning painting and “graph or gram” meaning
drawn or written) describes an image, sign or symbol which is created in order to express
some idea or information.
Paleolithic Era
Concept of life is for survival (search for food, for fertility & survive)
Cave Art- Refers to the decoration of the walls of rock shelters and caves all throughout the
world.

Ancient Tattoo- Serves as a sign of social status, mark of one’s passage through life, or
simply to beautify the body.

Mesolithic Era
The ice began, retreating and life got a little easier, but was not still no picnic. They did
produce pottery for utilitarian purposes. Portable art disappeared due mainly to humans
beginning to settle down. Rock painting, outside of caves was prevalent with a move
towards painting more humans.
Ancient Pottery- Used for domestic
purposes to store food and water.
Example:
Late Minoan Period (1700-1425 BCE) Palace style Vace Neopalatial,
Greek hydria with birds (700 BCE) Water-carrying vessel
Mesolithic Tools were generally composite devices manufactured with small chipped stone
tools called and retouched bladelets. The Paleolithic utilize more primitive stone treatments,
and the Neolithic mainly used polished rather than chipped stone tools.
Cueva de la Manos, Rio Pinturas
The Cueva de la Manos, Rio Pinturas, contains and exceptional assemblage of cave art,
executed between 13,000 and 9,500 years ago. It takes its name Cave of Hands from the
stenciled outlines of human hands in the cave. But there are also many depictions of
animals such as guanacos (llama), still commonly found in the region, as well as hunting
scenes. The people responsible for paintings may have been the ancestors of the historic
hunter-gatherer communities of Patagonia found by European settlers in the 19th century.

Neolithic Era
Human started farming and settled in villages.
Neolithic Art
The seated woman of Catholhoyuk- is a 8,000 year old
Neolithic baked-clay figurine unearthed at Catholhoyuk.
It depicts a nude female seated between feline-headed
arm rest. Generally thoight to depict a fertile Mother
Goddess in the process of Giving birth.

Megalith- Most notable of Neolithic art was the Menhirs- upright slabs of stone,
megaliths massive stone monuments. Grave markers

Dolmens- Table like Stone Structures. Cromlechs- groups of menhirs in a circle.


Stonehenge- Calendar in the prehistoric time
