KMA 2100: Foundation Mathematics

Purpose: To provide learners with skills and knowledge in mathematics
Expected Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course the student should be able to;
1. Display mastery of basic concepts in mathematics and to apply them to
higher level mathematics.
2. Handle elementary functions and their graphs, polynomials in one variable and partial
fractions.
3. Explain the concepts of permutations, combinations and trigonometry and solve problems
related to these concepts.
Course Content
Algebra: Surds, indices and, and logarithms. Applications of logarithms to conversion of non-
linear equations to linear form. Quadratic equations, Polynomial equations up to third degree,
their graphs, solutions and applications. Logarithmic and exponential functions and their graphs.
Series, finite, infinite, AP, GP, including applications to compound interest growth and decay;
Remainder theorem and its application to solutions of higher degree polynomial equations.
Permutations and combinations. Applications to Binomial expansion for positive integral index
only approx. Functions and their operations. Trigonometry: Trigonometric ratios and functions.
Graphs of trigonometric functions. Trigonometric identities. Compound angles & formulae.
Double angles formulae. Half angle formulae and their applications to areas of triangles.
Trigonometric equations and their solutions. Sine and cosine rules and their applications to
solving triangles.
