Transforming Graphs

The document discusses various transformations of graphs, including vertical and horizontal shifts, scaling, and reflections. It provides instructions for using a constant controller to visualize these transformations and encourages predictions about the coordinates of minimum points. Additionally, it includes exercises for sketching transformed graphs and finding equations for specific translations.

Transforming Graphs

y=f ( x )+ b
Go to Graph Transformations 1.
It shows the graph of the function y=f (x ) and the function y=f ( x )+ b.

What will happen if we set the value of b to 1? What about -1?

Use the constant controller to adjust the value of b.

Predict the coordinates of the minimum point of y=f ( x )−4 .
Check your answer using the constant controller.

In the box below write a brief description of what happens under this transformation.

y=f ( x+ a )
Go to Graph Transformations 2.
It shows the graph of the function y=f (x ) and the function y=f ( x+ a ) .

What will happen if we set the value of a to 1? What about -1?

Use the constant controller to adjust the value of a.

Predict the coordinates of the minimum point of y=f ( x−3 ) .
Check your answer using the constant controller.

In the box below write a brief description of what happens under this transformation.

Transforming Graphs
y=f ( x+ a ) +b
Go to Graph Transformations 3.
It shows the graph of the function y=f (x ) and the function y=f ( x+ a ) +b .
For each of the graphs below, predict the coordinates of the minimum points and write
them down.

1) y = f(x + 2) + 4 2) y = f(x - 3) - 2 3) y = f(x +1) – 1

4) y = f(x - 4) + 3 5) y = f(x + 5) - 2 6) y - 4 = f(x + 3)

Now check each of your answers by using the constant controller to edit the values
of a and b.

Notes

If you want to play around with different functions to really get to grips with the
1
transformation you can change the function defined by f (x), perhaps to x 3 or or
x
anything else.
On the Autograph files (not the online Activities) you can change the starting function
f (x) by clicking the function definitions button and editing the start function.
